Nokia N8 preview: First look

05 October 2010
We were almost starting to suspect mobile phones of giving up and playing soft. They seemed unstoppable you know. They went from 5 to 12 in no time and there was nothing to suggest that digicams will ever get a timeout for a much needed breather...

Picked up my pre-ordered Nokia N8 from Nokia store in Hyderbad, IN today morning. The price was 1K less than the amount listed on Nokia.co.in site. Also got a free Sennheiser corded headset and pouch for free! Got everthing transferred by the store rep from N73 to N8. Enjoying the phone. It is awesome. No lag noticed (I had also played with SGS at Hypercity earlier). Just loving it :-))

The use of the USB on the go would come handy when you want to copy files say from a friend or co-worker but you don't have your laptop with you at that moment (mainly when you are attending a seminar or a presentation or getting out from a meeting not in your office and didn't bring your laptop with you. In this case, you can connect your friends USB flash memory to the N8 and you will be able to brows it's contents (files, media, excel sheets, word documents ... etc) anything in the flash memory will be visible in your file manger of the N8 (exactly like when you plug a USB flash memory to your laptop for example) and then you can get the file/files that you want the copy them to your N8 until you get back to your office or home (oe the other way around, send files from your N8 directly to your friend's USB flash memory).
I know you can connect many mobiles in mass storage mode, but this is different, you don't need a computer/laptop here, just your N8 and the connection cable which is very small and handy to keep it with you all the time.

Alui, 12 Oct 2010You are welcome, but I had to say you made me smile with th... moreNo my friend, I didn't mean it this way.

The 2 way is for file transfer, like when you are reading from your USB flash memory, you can read and/or send files/videos/images from the flash memory to the N8 and vise versa.

I wasn't referring to N8 being able to show TV on it's screen (at least I don't claim I did it)... :-) But I seriously I don't think that it is possible to that with N8 or any other mobile phone, at least not a device that is currently available in the market.

Sorry if I wrote it in a confusing way :-)

Temperatures are around 38-40 C, it might be burning hot elsewhere, but since you've been here before you'd know that this is much better than the crazy 50 C it reaches in summer :-)

The humidity is low and this is a good thing as it reduces the burning feeling when you're out.

Just wanted to add +1 to those guys who are waiting for the review. The HD7 got a review first on day one, so unless you already had a HD7 before receiving an N8, the N8's review should have come out earlier. There could be different reasons why, so I'm not complaining. But with this preview claiming that all you're waiting for is a sunny day, then by the HD7's review you should already have had the sunny day.

Hope you can share your thoughts on the device soon.

"The Galaxy can not do this as the connection in the Galaxy works one way (from the mobile to the TV out connection)".

N8 can accept video signals from the TV? Can you display the TV content on the Nokia screen? :). BTW, SGS does not need a phisical connection with a TV who has DLNA. And about the USB. Do you have a sdcard reader with a micro-usb interface? I never felt the need for it, but I guess SGS has a connection mode for this too.

As I replied to a question about the "Made In..." tag on my N8, I found that mine is made in Finland, a friend of mine has his unit made in China, and sometime ago another friend had his unit made by Nokia. The three of us live in UAE (United Arab Emirates - Abu Dhabi & Dubai) and we all got our units from different suppliers. So I guess it depends on the source you are buying from to determine where the unit was made. :-)

yesterday evening i have tested nokia n8. i work for cosmote romania,at sales department and i am terminal tester. all the clouds spread out,all the lies fall down because i've tested myself. real conclusions:
-unique function for mobiles: it can read thru its usb with an adaptor any external memory stick, with all folders made on it,with mp3,and DIVX-high definition and mp4-high definition videos!!!!!
1-superb metal body, superb build,a real plesure to hold and type
                          2-very good display,gorilla glass,no stratch for sure!! i have strached with a key,and no traces,like glass of a high-quality watch!!!!!
3-contrast comparable with omnia hd,but slightly bad than this
                          4-mono speaker,but powerful and clear
5-super photos in the dark with the blitz, super detail
6-excellent macro from aprox.12-13 cm from the subject
7-good hd video, good detail, good bitrate, smooth movement, but the white balance transitions in artificial light is brutal, like all nokia do in video mode. omnia hd camera is better and smoother at white balance when light conditions change suddenly, but it has only 20 fps. n8 have 24 fps.
8-very nice user interface, better than any android or w.m. crap
                          9-fast,no lags,no problem

[deleted post]I appreciate the time and effort you took oon explaining to me the meaning of GL Benchmark results and traingles results from different mobiles. Therefore I would like to point out some issues about USB on the GO that N8 has.

from what I have been reading and from trying different mobile phones, only N8 has it. The function of USB on the GO is not related to the TV out, it is mainly allowing the phone to communicate via USB in 2 directions (to the phone and from the phone) when tranferring/exchanging date. For example, you can connect the normal USB flash memory to the N8 via the supplied connection and be able to read the content of the flash memory and copy file from and to it directly. No need for a computer in the middle. Also as "Wheez" showed me before, N8 accepts connection of standard USB mouse like the ones you used in the computer/laptop and actually you get a mouse cursor on the screen. I tried it myself and it worked, no installation or driver needed. I just unpluged my mouse from the laptop and connected it to the N8 and it worked ! (took some time though, about 1 minute to recognize it). "Wheez" did point out that this works with standard USB mouse, the ones that are plug-n-play compatible. For expert mouse units it's a different story as they need specialt installation software even with the computer, but that's not the point here. The Galaxy can not do this as the connection in the Galaxy works one way (from the mobile to the TV out connection). There is no Flash memory reading/writing setup in the Galaxy. This is what USB on the Go do.

Again, I'm only replying to you as appreciation for your explanation to me and I do thank you very much for that.

I hope that was bit useful :-)

As for the 2mm charger, it comes in handy when you're using the USB socket for something else like, say, USB on the go.
