Mobile phone display mega shootout: The full picture

There are so many of them that it’s pretty hard to make up your mind. It all boils down to LCD vs. LED although this simple fact is easy to overlook. You can go ahead and blame it all on marketing but that’s one thing that just can’t be black or...

Second - I guess you own a Droid.
Third - This review is based on their judgment and findings. Just because something is down on paper, it doesn't always reflect what a user experiences. There are many variables that need to be taken into account that could alter the users experience with a device screen.

    Terrible Review:

    1) Exclusion of Moto Droid/Milestone is a failure.
    2) You fail to measure screen with any scientific data:

    Look here!
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4045/lgs-optimus-7-samsungs-focus-reviewed-a-tale-of-two-windows-phones/4

You measure based on solely subjective means. Where's the contrast ratio? Brightness nits?

The iPhone 4 doesn't even do well on Contrast compared to the DROID. Your review clearly fails. It's already accepted HTC's AMOLED or LCD screens are subpar compared to Samsung's AMOLED or the IPS the DROID uses.

    So what gives?

    3) WTF you fail to measure color gamut. How can you claim anything about color reproduction unless you measure gamut?

AMOLED screens like the Nexus one show like 140% of Gamut. Meaning 40% of colors are artificial and inflated. The iPhone 4 like the 3GS comes in at around 65% while the Droid comes in at 102%. The Droid is far more accurate. How can you give a "good" rating to the iPhone 4. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

I enjoy GSM Arena's ability to get its hands on 20 different phones, but when you FAIL to review any of these scientifically, then how does it matter?

hayato, 04 Dec 2010i think it's 2 subpixels only, the layout is RG BG instead ... morethank you

if that's the case it would mean certain pixels cannot produce certain colours. in particular it would have trouble with the colour purple.

i'll probably need second camera to zoom in on the display to test if that's correct (or a microscope).

"In the end it all depends on what you use the phone - and the screen - for. The I9000 Galaxy S seems to be the best performer overall"

          Super AMOLED wins easily.

When I first heard about 'Retina Display' I thought it was just some stupid gimmick. But when I actually saw the iPhone 4 it was totally mind-blowing! Like it's incredibly sharp and the details are insanely awesome. IMO it's currently the beset out there.

disclosure: i own a samsung wave

so with pentile, are samsung using 2 or 4 sub-pixels per pixel?
noting the resolution is quoted as 800x480 _pixels_.
                  if they're using 4 sub-pixels per pixel, i don't care.
                  if they're using 2 sub-pixels per pixel, then it's a concern.

also i'd rather see the sub-pixel comparison using the wave rather than sgs. when looking at the sgs matrix, a green sub-pixel seems half the size of a blue or red sub-pixel. that is, if the greens were paired right next to each other (no gap) they would look the same width as the blue and red sub-pixels. it's also clear the higher resolution is resulting in a fair amount of gap between the sub-pixels.

                        iPhone 4 and Galaxy S ( Captivate ) owner here !!

The resolution on iPhone 4 is simply insane. It's paper like with alphabet written as if they r on paper no matter how much you Zoom it. Web pages , Book reading is the best in business. But honestly when it comes to watching movies , Samsung Galaxy S phone's Super Amoled is Amazing. Dark is amazingly Dark and colors simply pop out. But it has some what bluish tint to it when browsing white pages or books which I don't like.

                        So in my opinion :

IPHONE 4 Insane Resolution + Super Amoled ( minus that bluish Tint ) = Best Screen Technology

Lemme know if you guys agree with me cuz I think that Phone Manufacturers see threads like these and if they wanna succeed they will and should implement what users want.

Cuz market is in it toughest competition. Good to see Android giving Apple a run for it's money. All we need to see is Excellent Hardware and Apps on Android to Beat Apple. But at the same time I know that Apple will do something again to Beat the Market , the way they did with iPhone 4 ( Almost Perfect Phone minus Antenna Issue ).

From apple 3gs, I got HTC wildfire (low res)for a month to try android and loved it. Then downgrade to Nokia x3-01 (HTC suddenly stopped connecting to router, thought changing phone will let me connect again: WRONG!) -- did not last a week and thought about getting HTC Desire/Iphone 4. However, did a little research and found Samsung Galaxy i9000! To me HTC Desire seems to be wildfire's big brother and iphone is similar to the itouch that i still have... Galaxy is something I haven't tried, and did not regret it!

Mobile phone choice is purely subjective though. Iphone have better apps IMO at least at the moment, but android is not far behind. HTC Desire build is great. Nokia N8 is chunky but I think the loudspeaker is really pumped up (w/c I like). Overall, I found my home with Galaxy.

its a good feature the only problem is that you didnt include pixel density in the table, amoled virutal pixel density sucks, just check any straight 1 pixel line

Anonymous, 02 Dec 2010Coming from the super amoled user no doubt, thing is though... moreActually, this is coming from a soon to be samoled user. :) Been doing my research between ip4 and sgs. Making my choice not based on the screen though. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t join the fan clubs. In fact, I think overall the iphone is better for most people and would have gotten it if not for a few deal breakers. But you have to hand it to Samsung for their screen tech.

Yes there is pinch to zoom but in actual usage it goes up nowhere near 25x. Maybe you are referring to text, that’s where most people see the difference. Even then the sgs is still comfortably legible. However, when you look at pics and movies, that’s where the samoled shines. I don’t know about you but for me I don’t ogle on text. I don’t mind having very slightly fuzzy text as long as its comfortably legible. However I do want my pics and movies to pop (sharp and have brilliant colors). Samoled delivers on both. Now some of you may say the ip4 is sharper and on paper yes. However in actual usage you practically don’t see it. According to steve jobs ip4 has smaller pixels than a 20/20 person can see. If you have 30% less of this you still won’t notice it that much… especially if you don’t have 20/20 vision or hold the phone at a normal distance (by the way I don’t wear glasses). Try holding the sgs at a normal distance, zoom a quality pic at a practical level and see if you can see pixels.

As per my point in the previous post we have reached the end of the pixel wars. Anything higher than ip4 is pointless. 30% less than that is still excellent. Maybe this is why GSM Arena didn’t rate it anymore, they practically can’t tell the difference. To be fair, they just give you the figures. It’s up to you to decide if its important to you or not. To see if the difference matters to you, take a look and compare both devices.
