Mobile phone display mega shootout: The full picture

There are so many of them that it’s pretty hard to make up your mind. It all boils down to LCD vs. LED although this simple fact is easy to overlook. You can go ahead and blame it all on marketing but that’s one thing that just can’t be black or...

There are several mistakes in this article. The X10 has a 4" screen, not 4.1". Also, the second sharpest screen is the Samsung Wave, not the X10. Where are the AMOLED and S-LCD screens from HTC? You could have used the Nexus one and HTC 7 Trophy in this comparison. Finally, the AMOLED shortage from Samsung is lifting as they open new manufacturing plants, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I don't get all these superlative marketing names for displays. It's either LED, LCD, OLED or AMOLED. It doesn't really matter. It all boils down to whether the user is happy with how it looks or not. It doesn't matter if AMOLED is the latest and greatest. If the user is not fond of unnatural saturated colors, he/she will not be happy with AMOLED and would probably go for an LCD display. Vice versa. All these names just create more confusion to an already overwhelming long list specs of mostly unnecessary features. Sometimes, there's more beauty in simplicity.

Finally I am so glad to own the finest piece of mobile phone display technology: the undisputed Samsung GS Vibrant from T Mobile with screen protector and perfect semi soft case. So is one from my hot Korean gf GS with an optical mouse which I need (coming from ex Omnia i900 experience).

Excellent review GSMArena. I always enjoy this type of comparison reviews from you. Keep up the good work.

Super AMOLED is my 1st choice ;although i think the current resolution is good enough if they would get a little higher resolution they would be hands down the best, . Also Nokia`s C6-01 screen looks impressive.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2010The extra resolution doesn't matter at all? And Apple ha... morethey don't neccesary need those extra resolutions as detailed this review those screen super amoled/clear black screens already have the edge, the extra resoultion upgrade on a 4.5 inch screen however is a welcome feature as on a screen that size its a noticable feature on that size of screen matrix, its not noticeable on screens differencing 3 and 3.5 inchs are regular arm distance you hold a phone,(difference between retina and 850x40 for eg.)but you missed the point entirely with this.

Lets get a 12inch moniter with 1080p and put it next to a 720p moniter with oled for example and see which looks better (not at apples if you press your eye right against the screen you can't see pixels achievement......ironically Lgs technology)

A screen comparison is not complete without comparing PenTile matrix screens versus "normal" matrix screens. The subpixel resolution of a Samsung Amoled is for instance almost comparable (768k subpixels) to the subpixel count of a seemingly much lower resolution Nokia Amoled (691k subpixels), and much lower than the Retina Display subpixel count (1840k subpixels).

Jibes aside. I think every display has it's merits. It's a wonderful world we live in right now where all smartphone users can watch movies on large displays. And it's a great way to view the Internet. 10 years ago if you had said we could browse the Internet and use social networks like we do we'd laugh.

And Apple haters keep saying that iphone owners are always disregarding stuff like Multitasking and higher megapixel cameras are not needed. (which I have NEVER seen from actual iphone owners comments)

Yeah, it won't matter at all until Nokia and Samsung fans get their 1000x600 screens. Hypocrisy.

What, no mention of the stupid pentile matrix used in most AMOLED displays.

They really only compared images/pictures but what about text legibility where AMOLED fails miserably compared to the others!

"...don't hesitate to go for an iPhone 4 if you need more resolution for those web pages. "

Wouldn't the consumer favor the 4" display, over the 3.5" if they want legibility?

At the end of the day, ALL these displays are gorgeous and sufficient for everyday use. LCD is just as good as SUPERAMOLED or Retina whatever display, unless you're doing side by side comparisons.

..but SGS display's extra size offers more room for fingers and, coupled with proper aspect ratio, way better solution for watching videos.
same goes for XPERIA and HTC HD.
This aspect is more important to me than viewing angles or sunlight legibility

Side by side, my wife's iPhone 4 Retina Display looks brighter than the Super AMOLED of my SGS on maximum brightness but the contrast is richer on the SGS. The iPhone 4 also wins in the sharpness department with its 326 ppi.
