Sony Ericsson W8 review: Robot dance

27 June 2011
No pause and rewind. Fast forward instead and rebrand. The Sony Ericsson W8 is an Xperia X8 in Walkman guise. There's not even a hint of surprise about it. The Sony Ericsson W8 has no new tricks up its sleeve. It’s a year old...

Bought this phone yesterday. Loved the slick fit and finish, the back cover with the matt texture (which resembles anodised aluminum in some angles) and the gorgeous display. I like displays with a slight warm color temp and this one was perfect. The HVGA resolution is a boon.

The reason why I'm so easily impressed with this low end droid is because I've been on the s60 non-touch wagon all this time. This's my first Android and I'm blown away. The screen is wonderfully sensitive and animations are smooth. The phone has modest specs, but it is fast. The Timescape UI seems quite well optimised and I prefer this over Touchwiz.

The only drawback I see here is the outdated 2.1 Eclair. Being unable to install apps on the sd card isn't cool. Seriously- it's high time SE moved onto Froyo at least for these affordable little droids. I'm sure that the paltry internal memory of 150 mb will be depleted within this week. An unofficial update can fix it- but I can't bring myself to do it- I liked the skinned UI Sony has provided with the phone.

The cam isn't a digicam replacement either- but I don't use mob cams much anyway. Haven't tested the runtime on battery- haven't got high hopes after reading from other forums about the X8.

Well, call it cognitive dissonance or anything you like- I liked this phone. Nothing in the feature list that I don't need and I think I got what I've paid for. It does what it promises to do and doesn't make tall claims about what it isn't. An entry level phone with character- that's what sets it apart from competition where all of them look like clones of one another.

Anonymous, 28 Jun 2011What else do you expect from a low-end smartphone? A 4"... more512 RAM is achievable on low-end smartphones. Go look at Optimus One, Wildfire S, Galaxy Pro.

Getting a 2010 mid-range phone with an obsolete Android version, changing (a bit) its looks and adding a media player? Nothing interesting here except for current X8 owners getting a nice ROM to flash their phones with. And let me guess, SE will ask at least 300$. Well done SE...!!!(ironic).

Though X8 copy cat but music n walkman tag differ it from crowd. Will surely love to have 1.

Thanks goodness they give W8 the real Walkman sound engine! Combined with good headset, this is one of the best bargain music phone, let's see Eclair is just a bonus :)

Also, what's the problem with the contrast on the videos? REALLY didn't see.

I think this phone deserved better credit for its camcorder capabilities. You know Samsung got plenty of phones that costs twice the price with stupid QVGA@15FPS recording...

"Videos are rendered in 3gp format suggesting lower bitrate, which in turn leads to some compression artifacts. Video also suffers from the lack of contrast so videos aren't too nice to watch on a computer screen.

                          Something wrong in here?
