Nokia 808 PureView review: Photo Finnish

22 June 2012
The Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone ever made. End of story. Now, how do you proceed from there? And why is this particular phone so hard to write about? How about because a picture is worth a thousand words and we just had a...

"Nokia N8 sold 4 million units in under a year."
it's true. but remember, back then there was no Elop the TrojanHorse.
Nokia 808's situation might be difference, people will hesitate to buy it since Mr.TrojanHorse already announced that he will kill Symbian next year.

AnonD-27765, 23 Jun 2012How is microSIM card a disadvantage of this phone when ever... moreI'm a Nokia fan, but Symbian has some disadvantages compared to competitors, but it has a lot of advantages as well and it is GSMArena's job to point disadvantages too. I think no one should have nothing to complain about this review... This phone is just perfect for me and you, but it may not be perfect to people that don't care about the camera and want to use their phones to play games or just to show off(like most Ifans) and there's nothing wrong to use it for these or other purposes.

Many said symbian is inferior to android and ios but take note that it takes many apps to download from android and ios market just to have some of the apps/capabilities on a stock Symbian phone. Te efficiency of running an os on a single core and the fast UI is just amazing. You have the camera that is way ahead of its time on a mature OS. Well sad to say most of us nowadays buy phones depending on the trend and all the eye candies it can offer. Why use multiple cores when you can't utilize all of it? I know that contrary to popular belief that more cores mean less battery backup is false but symbian manages to pull it with a single core and "real" multitasking(no random background app closure like android nor multitasking-but-no-multitasking by ios).
Anyway, if not for Elop's announcement of the certain death of symbian i wouldn't be using a GSII+N8 now, it will still solely b symbian phone..

Great review! Objective and a little emotional at the same time, written with an excellent style. It's a pleasure reading it. GSMArena is definitely the most trusted website regarding phone reviews. Thanks for doing such a great job.

If WP8 was coming to my Lumia, I'd be getting the 808 to replace my ageing P&S camera.

As it is, WP8 Lumia with PureView will definitely be my next phone!

808 isn't big at all. It is slightly larger than the N8 and it will look like a dwarf when put next to a Smsung Galaxy S III, Note and HTC One X.

                    This is Nokia...
How true, not many people understand symbian.
its the only os that gives you total control.

                    i dont care about apps
most of them are rubish and take up memory

ill support symbian to the end. im mad and i like it...

How is microSIM card a disadvantage of this phone when everything else on the market is using a microSIM as it is now the standard size for a SIM card? And the "Symbian ecosystem lags behind Android and iOS" and "Relatively limited 3rd party software availability" are just the same thing. This phone is just perfect that you will have to repeat the same cons just to find more faults in it.

I'm using lumia 800 and galaxy note right now.
                            I miss symbian sometimes.

Nokia decision to jump on wp is a fail move. Microsoft just dumb my lumia recently.

Symbian is dead, meego no where near the symbian greatness.

                            But pureview is something else.
Great review, balance and pro. Not like other websites.

The Nokia 808 is easily the most innovative phone for a few years. There's the obvious giant sensor camera, but also the different form factor, and the almighty Symbian Belle.
It's as if the Nokia team who developed it just said: "cameraphones?... Please..... THIS is a cameraphone!"

I understand the market in app driven now, and even as a Symbian fan I have to admit I would miss the apps I have in my Android that don't exist for Symbian.

But all in life is a compromise, so I would happily hand over my Galaxy S and Canon S95 for this phone. It will sync all my google mail/contacts/calendar, and it runs Endomondo, so I'm set. :) :)

AnonD-616, 23 Jun 2012Still symbian is best friendly :-) os :-) everything workin... morei don't own s2 but i have less powerful android phone i downloaded 250 apps with no lag,the lag occurs only with certain apps and\or when u have many of apps run in the background.
symbian was a good os but now it is outdated.
for people who are using their phones mainly for taking photos and videos the pureview is the best choice .

Thanks for the review! Been waiting for it ever since the phone was announced, I saw the news on my Nokia in the Facebook stream when I woke up, turned my PC on, and the GSMArena page was crashing from all the visitors rushing to see what the bleep just happened. Very well written (I'm a writer, and compliments on the style, exactly what it need to be) and probably will be one of your most read articles for a few years to come. Now excuse me, I'm going to read it again. :-)

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2012windows phone still gotta fail, microsoft doenst get it, it... moreNot necesarilly. IOS is a walled garden just like winphone (and people have embraced it quite nicely). Still MS has a lot do though, but if it can offer a good app market, Good hardware to compete with current competition, and an overall good user experience then it might just give android/IOS a run for their money.
