Although software updates won't suffice for these awful latest Samsung midrangers

Because it cost more cheaper and, 1tb and 12gb of ram? Yeah. I would switch to that phone. I wouldn't mind if it has 16MP Camera. (just saying, no offense.)

          Sprite, 22 Dec 2023Would switch to an s10+ if i find one in good condition and... moreI got my S10+, 128 GB internal and 8 GB RAM, for about 253 USD used. No cracks, no dents, no burn-in, pristine condition. I have a 256 GB MicroSD for music and general storage so I had no need to buy a larger storage - 256 is plenty enough, especially since I don't take pictures or videos. I specifically looked for Exynos version due to unlockable bootloader. Wish I could have bought the 1 TB version due to its 12 GB RAM, but oh well. Those are pretty much impossible to find in the Exynos variant (yes, there are Snapdragon 1 TB versions on eBay, but I NEED root and custom ROM, so no thanks).

          Why this and not, say, S20 Ultra which also has a MicroSD slot, with 512 GB version with 16 GB RAM Exynos version available new on Amazon (900 euro but money's no issue due to my reliance on custom ROMs hence very long-term usage guaranteed for years and years), and due to my reliance to Shanling UA3 DAC/AMP and its much higher power output, don't care for the 3.5mm slot? No custom ROMs! Except BeyondROM, which is based on stock ROM. And I'm not sure if even that ROM will go to Android 14.

          Meanwhile, S10+ has official LineageOS 20 with latest Android 13 currently, and there already are unofficial LineageOS 21 based on Android 14 versions available for download. So it's safe to say S10+ will live on for more with Android 14. And if you want more features, you can download crDroid (a feature-focused custom ROM based on LineageOS) with also Android 13. Both are available for download on their official webpages. Update stock ROM to latest version first, then flash custom ROM. You can freely format the system partition when flashing the custom ROMs since they don't depend on stock ROM at all. The only downsides on custom ROMs not based on stock OneUI is there is currently no support for VoLTE/VoWiFi but that's all (the code for those is proprietary and wasn't reverse-engineered yet), everything else works and it's stable for everyday usage.

          Do not use TWRP or other custom recovery for LineageOS or crDroid other than their official recoveries if deciding to do this.

          If you decide to splash on Exynos S10+, and decide to root, use Lygisk instead of Magisk, as Lygisk restores root on OTA updates (yes, both LineageOS and crDroid have OTA functions). Then install the Shamiko module and add banking and other apps that detect root to DenyList in Lygisk, and Play Integrity Fix to bypass Google's SafetyNet, then reboot.

          To root without a PC, once you've flashed the LOS or crDroid recovery, download the Lygisk apk, make a copy, and rename the .apk extension to .zip. Then flash that zip in recovery, confirm that you want to flash the unsigned zip and that'a that. Then boot to system, open Lygisk, and allow it to additionally flash the boot partition to complete the process, then reboot. Open it once again, then see if it asks one more time to flash, if it does, choose Direct Install, wait for the process to finish, restart and that's it.

          Also, a word of caution: do NOT reboot while the notification about system update is progressing, otherwise you'll get a bootloop and have to wipe data. That's all. Once the notification is gone, it's safe to reboot. So leave the device to finish the update, and only then open Lygisk to see if it needs additional flashing of boot partition.

          Other plus is the S10+ has a Bixby button (called Menu in LineageOS) which you can reprogram to do basically anything using Physical Button Master Control. Pretty handy to open the music player, change songs and play/pause playback - turns it into a veritable music device with a dedicated button for playback. Use 4.2.1 version to configure the button (since 4.3 force-closes if choosing an app to open), then install 4.3 and export the button configuration. You'll need an LSPosed Magisk module for this. Once you reboot, the button will be reprogrammed.

          I'd also advise to install Neo Backup from F-Droid to back up app installations and data, in case something happens (hey, once you root and experiment, it can be inevitable to get a bootloop until you get a hang of it) and select your MicroSD card as data storage since wiping your internal memory will also wipe the data. That's why I am a fan of the MicroSD slot when rooting - no need to recopy your data. I'd also advise you to install Magisk Bootloop Protector by HuskyDG that disables all Magisk modules in case of a bootloop caused by any modules - if that happens, system will try to boot, fail, restart, and boot successfully with all modules except the Protector disabled. Why's this important? Because LineageOS (and I suspect crDroid too) encrypts internal storage with FBE encryption, making it impossible to retreive your data if the phone's not booted and unlocked. Meaning, you cannot delete modules through recovery or transfer the data through any means other than by turning on the phone and unlocking it. There's also an option in Privacy to disable USB data connections while the device is locked or even disable them completely, which means nobody can access your data unless the phone is unlocked. Pretty secure if you ask me.

          The only thing I had to do with my S10+ is clean the Type-C port with a needle to get all of the dust out (and there was A LOT of it) which caused the charging to stop if the part of the cable connected to the charging port was wiggled (or the cable moved by normal phone usage) and I also had to clean the 3.5mm port since it would crackle and disconnect if I bent of spun the cable which I did by dipping a Q-Tip in alcohol, inserted it and spun it, which I repeated several times until the Q-Tip stopped becoming black. After that, no issues. Pristine condition.

          If you need 12 GB RAM, you can also buy Note10+ which also has a MicroSD slot and a larger 4300 mAh battery (but no 3.5mm jack) which also has LineageOS support.

              Anonymous, 18 Dec 2023Thanks so much There's also the matter of higher resolution on S10+ - 1440x3040 vs Note10's 1080x2280 - in addition to the slightly larger screen. Don't know if you'd be able to notice the difference but the resolution is noticeably larger on the 10+. Which should lead to sharper images and text.

              And I don't think there's much difference with S10+ Exynos 9820 vs Note10's 9825 - in my experience on official LineageOS 20 the phone's 9820 is really cool and blazingly fast - no need to upgrade at all. And Note10 also has LineageOS support too. And you can already find unofficial LineageOS 21 builds. If that's your forte (to have the latest Android with all the features and security patches that brings with it) then look for Exynos rather than Snapdragon as the Snapdragon's bootloader is not unlockable meaning no community aftermarket support.

              Also, expandable storage with MicroSD and 3.5 mm jack (as I said before) are two major factors for the S10+, in addition to the larger battery - in fact, Note10 has the same battery capacity as S9+ which is a generation older. And 15 W charging charges from 10 or so percent to 100 in about an hour and 40 minutes. 25 W charging on Note10 would charge it even faster.

              And take extra care to find out if the S10+ you'll be buying has 6 or 8 GB of RAM. There are 12 GB RAM versions too, and they only come in 1 TB internal storage, and I couldn't find Exynos variants easily, though Snapdragons were easier to find on eBay.

              And if you decide to root, use Lygisk rather than Magisk as Lygisk autorestores root on OTA updates, unlike Magisk.

                      S10+ has a MicroSD slot and a 3.5mm jack, while the Note10 doesn't. S10+ has a larger battery (4100 vs 3500 mAh), larger display (6.4 vs 6.3 inches).

                      Only go for Note10 if you want a newer CPU (Exynos 9825 vs 9280), UFS 3.0 (vs 2.1 on S10+), S-Pen and 25 W charging (vs 15 W on S10+).

                      Also, take care to know that there is a 6 GB version of S10+ (128/6 version), the other two are 128/8 and 512/8, and the last 1024/12 version. Note10 only comes in 256/8 version.

It's still quite fast and the display is amazing. Now it won't be getting updates for android and one ui but for security you can use an anti virus for more safety. The note 10 and plus are phones with a unique design and looks quite like the s23 ultra. The battery is much better I do think so, but the difference is low. Also you get a s-pen with the note phone. Also the chances are higher to find a 5G model on the note 10 and plus.

                              Hello there. I wanna ask if it is possible to change my S10+ back cover from glass to ceramic as I've heard it is stronger than glass. Also, is there any good screen protector that covers the screen edges, gives a matte and privacy-like screen view and supports fingerprint scanners? Thanks

                                  Battery life is amazing (seriously, over 12 - up to 16 - hours browsing non-stop and screen constantly on with Firefox projected, with only Quora as the major battery drainer - Quora wastes it really quickly; everything else uses so little battery it's unreal). I got it this way by placing absolutely every app, except those that I need to keep from getting killed and/or running in background like JamesDSP or jetAudio+, into restricted battery mode (default is optimized) which kills them aggressively and keeps them from turning themselves on if they are in background (usually, 2 apps opened after sending them to background kills them, freeing up RAM for more effective multitasking for those apps you didn't put into restricted battery mode). Rest are left at optimized. Only a select few are configured to run always in background (unrestricted battery mode - they will ask for this) and they use it to run scheduled tasks (such as reminders app, Radarbot for warning about speed cameras or syncing my files with cloud every night, for which I pay Google One 3 or so USD per month for 200 GB of storage) - they don't run in background at all until their schedule comes, they do the tasks, and exit themselves.

                                  There is no throttling or heat-up, it's blazingly fast and responsive no matter what I throw at it. Only things that heat it up a little bit are long-to-execute scripts (NUKED that disables analytics/tracking/ads/etc via Termux), frequent consecutive restarts, fast charging and Quora - it never once got heated up more than slightly warm.

                                  Using LineageOS 20 on it, rooted. Multitasking is good, can run quite a few apps with 8 GB of RAM.

                                  128 GB internal doesn't bother me. I use 256 GB MicroSD for storage and music files. Installed apps (128 of them listed, excluding the "Show system apps" option) use 28 GB of internal storage, plenty of room left for many more apps if I need them.

                                  Based on my experience, Exynos 9820 is a beast, lightning quick yet still cool and power-efficient - I didn't even need to limit max frequency for the three core clusters with SmartPack Kernel Manager at all, the cores are allowed to run at max frequency if they so desire, and the phone remains at room temperature (barring, as I said above, things like Quora or fast charging).

Snapdragon's bootloader is not unlockable and there is no community support in ways of rooting and custom ROMs. Plus, using LSPosed and Physical Button Master Control you can reprogram the Bixby button (called Menu in LineageOS) to control music, open apps and so on (I have it set so that one tap chooses next song, double tap previous, while tap and hold opens the music player) depending on the conditions you set (ie. the action can only be performed with screen on, screen on and off, device unlocked and so on). Use 4.2.1 to configure buttons, reboot to check if the reprogram is successful, then update to 4.3 and export the reprogrammed settings (4.3 force-closes if choosing an external app but can export and import settings, while 4.2.1 cannot export and import).

                                    Make sure to set a sufficient delay if using one button for multiple functions, so that the system waits and listens to keypresses before executing the actions, otherwise it stops listening before you tap the button enough times. I found that a delay of 200 ms is sufficient for it to distinguish between a single tap, double-tap and tap-and-hold while quick enough that it responds quickly. You can also add vibration or other notifications on successful keypress so you know the actions executed.
