Sony Xperia J1 is the company's first SIM-free phone in Japan

19 March, 2015

Better late than never we guess - Sony has announced today the Xperia J1 Compact (D5788) for Japan, the company's first SIM-free smartphone in the country. The unlocked phone is similar in specifications to the Xperia A2 for NTT DoCoMo.

This includes a 4.3" 720p display, 20.7MP Exmor RS camera and a 2,300mAh battery. Power comes from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with a 2.2GHz quad-core CPU, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. All of this is secured in a good looking body that's IP68-certified.

Sony will launch the phone on April 20 in a cool looking white and champagne color combination. Pre-orders start on March 27 with a price of $454 (54,800 JPY + tax).

Sim free means without SIM card. In future carrier will be activated through software without a need for hardware sim.
