Verizon's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now receiving the July security patch too

Vlad, 14 July, 2016

Google started pushing out the July security patch for Android last week, and since then we've seen this rolling out to quite a few devices. The OnePlus One got it, international S7 and Note5 models, then T-Mobile's S7 and S7 edge, and earlier today the Note5 and S6 edge+ on both Verizon and T-Mobile.

And now the time has come for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge units sold by Verizon to receive the same treat. For both models, over-the-air firmware updates are already rolling out, but as always it may take them a few days to reach every single phone out there.

One key thing to note here is that after updating your S7 or S7 edge on Verizon you'll have the July 1 security update. This month Google's also pushed out an additional July 5 update that fixes some bugs related to device hardware, and these patches unfortunately aren't in. Hopefully Samsung and Verizon will issue another update in due course.

Are Android "security" updates even necessary? They do this every month and it's still the least secure mobile OS out there.

Are these multiple monthly announcements of security updates for the same phone over and over again really necessary?
