Ok, well I bought this phone from the Carphone Warehouse on O2. First tip-if you are already on O2, you dont need to buy the top up normally required. Win!
Anyway, but about myself. I am a 24 year old new mum. I use a phone mainly for texting, taking photos and MMS, with the odd facebook update.
I was using a Samsung D900i, but thought it was time to update. I had used a Viewty, but hated it-touchscreen with a baby in the other hand is not easy!
I had a Blackberry for a few days, I loved the phone, but was very disappointed that to use it properly on O2, you needed a contract with a BB bolt on. So got rid of that.
I saw the Alcatel OT 800 on a whim, as I originally thought it was a blackberry. So I went away, read reviews, and then decided to give it a shot. For the price, you cant moan.
And I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised. It is very similar to a Blackberry, but less 'business'. Exactly what I was looking for.
The first thing I noticed was the aesthetic value of the menus. They don't just 'appear'. The fade in and out nicely, and when switching screens, it has a lovely 'flip' animation. And the picture viewer-WOW! Its just a really nice feature. Not what you would expect for a phone of this price.
The camera, despite being only 2mpx, it is surprisingly clear. My last phone was 3mpx, but this phone actually seems better. Although that could just be the lovely big screen and resolution.
One downside-there is no flash on the camera. I was a little disappointed by that, but hey ho.
I actually managed to set the POP3 email up myself-no help from the technology mad other half-the phone is very simple. Tip number 2-go online for help with setting up a POP3 account. It is actually really easy, you just need the right settings depending on your email provider.
I have managed to set up caller ID photos, but the one pain in the ar*e was I had to transfer all the numbers to the phone to be able to do so. And there isnt a mention of that in the manual.
This phone is packed with lots of lovely applications-was very pleased to find a built in link to facebook, a pedometer, a hidden Java Sudoku application, IM capabilities-although i havent used this yet. There is a lovely weather application which can be set to very local areas. And as there is a motion sensor, there is a fun ball game.
There is also a version of Opera mini-a mobile internet browser-pre installed into the phone. Not something you would expect for £60!
Opera mini is fab, but i did have a little trouble setting up.
If you buy this phone on O2, and have trouble using Opera, try this.
Opera runs using Java. For some reason, all the Java, WAP and internet settings are preset to Orange pre pay. Make sure you set the settings for all of these to O2 pre pay, otherwise they wont work. This includes WAP.
Another thing to remember is to make sure the date and time are set correctly otherwise the Java applications and Opera will not work. (Rookie mistake I made-accidently set the date to 2009-Duh!)
The keyboard is nice to use-the buttons are quite small, but you get used to it very quickly.
The tones are loud and clear. Only qualm I have with that, is that there aren't really any 'short' message tones built in. The vibrate is quite strong too.
Alcatel are apparently renound for their colourful phones, and to be honest I am not that keen on the Chrome on the front-its asking to get destroyed by my son, and can imagine it chipping quite easily, so I am going to look into a cover. The pearlescent back to the phone is quite nice though. I do wish the tribe colours were available on O2-I really wanted a green one, but its no big deal.
All in all, I am pretty impressed with the phone. I managed to set it all up, fully functioning, by myself. The handset is user friendly, and the menus, themes and icons are really nice and well thought out.
It fits well in your palm, and is the ideal messaging phone.
If you are to buy this phone though, I would make sure you are set to a plan which has free WAP/browser/data included, as I can imagine you would spend a lot of credit if you were to use the email/weather app/facebook/opera a lot. I am on the O2 plan where for £15 a month top up I get unlimited texts and 50MB data. I advise that plan if you are to buy this phone on O2.
This phone really is the Blackberry for the everyday person. It is much nicer to use, and a fraction of the cost. Fair enough, it doesnt ahve WiFi nor 3G, but that is what you buy the higher end phones for.
I definitely recommend this phone. I was very apprehensive at first, but have been very pleasantly surprised.
Just a shame Alcatel isnt so well known in the UK-would be lovely to be able to download lots of apps-if you can and I have just been looking in the wrong place, please let me know!
I hope this has helped, and I hope it has helped some people who may have had issues setting the phone up on O2.

Looks great,
Feels great,
and has all the things you get on a normal phone.
Picked mine up at the carphone warehouse yesterday on O2 for £56.
Only flaw is there is no wifi but thats what you pay extra for.
Easy to text on and opera mini is great.
Overall a fantastic phone for the tiny price tag the carphone warehouse are selling it at.
