I'm not sure about your phone, maybe the software of different version. But in case of OT735 the search function can be found by viewing any name in phone book, better in general, push ok button,
you can see view, scroll up you can see 'exit', 'back', 'search', push ok button, now you can see search name. this function can even search three words name such as 'lau tak wah', just for example. For s853, the function can be found just scrolling once upward. I just want to point out that alcatel phone not as primitive as many people think.

to mnazam: thanks for the answer, but are You sure with the phonebook-search? i have OT735 & 756 and with both of them i cant search the whole name, just the first character....

Frans - better recheck your phone, there is search function like nokia, press ok button on any name in phonebook, better in general so all names listed, scroll up and you can find the search function, even OT735 has this function, but I have to agree with you on BT issue. The remote control only can be used to control mp3 player, and receiving and rejecting call.
Markus - I've tried to put java games in the phone, just drag and drop file jar to the memory card, many games available online, so you just need to test every game because not all game can be played. Video can't be rewind or fast forward, as far as I tested.

Okay, the situation with the Bluetooth sucks a little bit, but the phonebook search method i think is good, especally that it remains at the last contact you were...
Can sombody tell me if there is a possibility to put java games on the fone with the included software? Can I use an 1 gb SD card with this phone? Can you rewind while video playing?

I hope Alcatel immediately fix the weakness of the firmware of OT-S853 by launching new firmware if Alcatel does not want to be leave by it's fanatic users.

Here the major problems that Alcatel should fix immediately
                      1. Utilize the BLUETOOTH functionality. Not only for Hands-Free, but also able for data transfer, print bridge etc. We really need this functionality.
                      2. Search Phonebook only from the first character? Are you kidding? Your competitors can do better than this.

BTW, what the functionality of Remote Control? Can we replace the remote control of my TV or HiFi?

Bought the phone about 3 days ago. Haven't gotten around using it much yet. Still sticking to my Alcatel OT835. Yes, another Alcatel fan boy here. :)
Anyway, I took the new phone out of its box today to play with it a bit, and what happened next left me in great dismay.
With just a few soft fiddlings, the silver finish of the navigational thingie around the OK button came right off! A strip of it actually went off, stuck on my thumb revealing the black base! What the heck is this? I barely even touched the phone and the thing came off already?
But being an Alcatel fan, I'm not giving up. I'm going to the service centre tomorrow and have them look at this.
So for the meantime, those of you who already have the phone, keep an eye on the silver navigational thing. You wouldn't want the silver finish to come off like mine. But I may just be getting the bad apple out of the lot. Hmm...

PS: If you're wondering what I'm talking about, refer to the screenshots. It is the silver round piece surrounding the OK button, which you use to navigate through the phone's interface. Yeah, the silver color peeled off right on my finger. o_0

Finaly, i resolve my problem. the Alcatel PCsuite 4.18 version (special OT-S853) has been downloaded from the Alcatel web site (it was very, very, very slow : 1 to 4 ko/sec ! 17 hours of downloading). But the suite works well now and the phone, works well too. Really, its a good product.
i'm sorry for my dreadfull english, i'm going to learn it...

I feel uneasy with the SMS time stamp for first few days. Now I can get use with it as the time stamp appearing is GMT time, the network which appearing in all celco base station worldwide.

Dear mr xavier, I really feel sorry with that unnecessary problem. the pc suite included in the box is ver 4.17 which will not work( I think I already give a comment on that). If you are really interested with the phone please download new working pc suite ver4.18 from tcl-ta.com (big file ~400mb). But if you feel so dissappointed just return your phone or sell it to other ppl who are interested.

I bought this mobile today. the PCsuite includes in the box doesn't work at all. and the new Alcatel customers support site gives no solution... Great ALCATEL ! Very GREAT ! It should be forbidden to sell products in this conditions. i wll return it back to the shop. It's the last time that i buy a product manufacturated by ALCATEL.

Same problem with the msg time stamp but so far not having any problem sending any msg(using maxis in bintulu sarawak) . I just prefer if they retain the msg writing style like in my old 735. Good news to everyone after 2 wks now the bat life goes up to 3+ day with minimal use (like talking ~15 min/day with some sms)

malikye, i reside in kuala lumpur so bought it in here.
azm, i hv problems with the sms features especially with the time stamps. seems that with incoming msgs, the time stamp would be 8 hrs ahead of the local time and msg sending will fail every now and then. hv u ever encountered the problems?
