Still have this in 2022. Currently it is still running FireOS (customized KitKat) and I currently have it rooted. The only web browser that's modern that I can run on it is the Via Browser. PUBG still runs on KitKat but it's quite slow.

End of 2020 and I'm still using it to read daily. Tachiyomi for online manga, Comic Screen for local manga/comics, Lithium for ePUB and the like, ReadEra for PDFs. On Android 7 LineageOS 14.1. Scrolling can be a bit laggy but reading with no page flip animation is responsive enough with no significant lag between tapping the screen and moving to the next page. Screen is still wonderful and looks absolutely fantastic, manga has a very natural feel with LineageOS's built-in night light. In contrast, Fire 10's screen looks awful with its built-in FireOS night light, everything is yellowed out in a garish way.
Battery life is also kinda insane. It can idle with wifi connected for 2 whole weeks which is unfathomable for such an old tablet. Must be something in this LineageOS build with aggressive doze settings. With an hour or so of daily reading, the tablet will last for over a week on one charge. Amazon really did it right with the HDX 8.9, but unfortunately locking it down with FireOS killed popular consumer adoption. I got this back in the day used for a little over $200 and it has definitely been worth the money. Like it way more than my Surface Pro 4 for reading. And the HDX 8.9 plays youtube with no issues, although battery will be donezo after 3-4 hours of playback.
Was looking for an upgrade with the similar screen resolution and size (hard to go back below 300ppi and face the jagged edges everywhere), but it seems the only modern options are the Huawei Mediapad line or the Samsung Tab S5e and up line. Both are very expensive in the US. Might pick up a Mediapad for ~$200 when I'm in China. Samsung's AMOLED does look attractive but not at double the price point.

vpompilian, 18 Dec 2016Is it good as an ebook reader?Works great as an ebook reader unless you are in bright sunlight. If that is where you plan to do your reading, the Paperwhite is a better deal. Of course, the paperwhite is strickly an e-reader while the Fire tablet can be used for web surfing, playing games, and most anything else you would want to do with a tablet.

OK - have an issue - my Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 will not do ANYTHING. I have checked the charging port, the battery, the display board and the mother board - all are OK. Any ideas???

Best tablet in the world. Couldn't be happier with it. Has a stunning display and is incredibly fast. Other tablets of the same price are nothing compared to this one.:)!!
