State of Android update: Nougat gains, Lollipop still on top

Peter, 08 March 2017

Android Nougat has more than doubled its market share since last month - unfortunately, that still means it’s below 3% for v7.0 and v7.1 combined. The MWC saw many Nougat-powered devices, so expect v7.x to pick up speed thanks to affordable but capable devices like the Nokia 6, 5 and 3 and the Moto G5 and Plus.

Surprisingly, Marshmallow also gained ground, it went up from 30.7% to 31.3%. That goes to show that Androids are still being sold with the penultimate major version. Marshmallow is now within 1 percentage point of Lollipop, which remains the most popular release.

We guess the two will swap places next month but it will be many more months before Nougat catches up to even KitKat (v4.4 still powers over a fifth of Android devices).

Speaking of versions older than Marshmallow, they all lost market share so at least we can be fairly sure v5.x and below aren’t selling much.

Android updates are pathetic. Nougat is installed on as many phones as Gingerbread and ICS together. And those two are 5 year old versions of Android. I feel that every new version of Android that Google releases is as painful to them as it is comple...
