I think Apple just want us to wait just a little longer for it, for one purpose and one purpose only: More Profit. So, technically I think Apple wants us to buy the 1st Gen iPad Mini and then buy the next one with Retina Display.
But these are just my thought, I might be wrong.

It just getting and ipad ,make a 7inch then call it mini .not good as I hoped ....guess samsung got to them since they leading with mobiles and tablets ...sorry apple time to retire ,the iphone was great but now we seen it all ,I'm not a hater since I do have an iphone 5 ...but they need to step it up to take on samsung

Apple knows if they don't add external SD slot people are forced to buy a whole new device when they need more memory instead of simply buying a dirt cheap SD card which means you can keep using the device for years.
Because Apple knows their average customer has a lot of money to burn so they take advantage of that and find every way possible to charge more money instead of making them as good as they can they can possibly be.

If it makes sense to only have 160gb then why do they sell iPods with 160gb? and how much sense does it make to carry an iPhone and iPod just because the iPhone doesn't have enough memory when simply adding an external SD slot could solve that problem when sound quality on iPhone is just as good as iPod and the definition of a Smartphone is that it's designed to basically replace a load of other handheld devices.
