Got hold of the iPhone 3G 8GB 10 days back. Locked to AirTel, costs Rs 29500. The 3GS is not yet available in India. The salesman tells me that its coming in Nov with a price-tag of Rs 48K (over $1000) for 16GB and 55K for 32GB ($1250)!! I could get a MacBook for that money!!
Something's seriously wrong with Apple's sales strategy here in India. There is so much potential for a phone like this in this market, if only they get into an alliance with the service providers and reduce the price - an win-win alliance for both parties.
Another grouse is that iTunes Store is not available in India. you cant buy anything from iTunes. Thankfully the App Store works, and its loads of fun. The latest OS upgrade (3.0+) is also a major advancement over predecessors.
Some of the key limitations like video recording (to an extend), bluetooth file transfer, voice dialing etc are resolving using free apps. Here is a laundry list of nice-to-have features:
- at least a 600Mhz processor
- at least 256MB of RAM
- At least 2X improvement in battery capacity
- Multi-tasking
- 5MP camera with auto-focus, flash and 30fps video
- FM receiver and transmitter
With the current hardware technology, these features can easily be fit into a similar sized package as the 3GS.
