Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 to get new heart rate sensor, U2 chip

Apple will unveil the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 at its September 12 "Wonderlust" event. Both smartwatches are said to look similar to their predecessors, but Bloomberg claims these watches will use a new version of Apple's optical heart rate sensor instead of the third-gen heart rate sensor from the Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra.

The Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 will also get various other sensor and internal component upgrades focusing on speed, accuracy, and efficiency. Additionally, like the iPhone 15 series, they will come with the new U2 ultrawide-band chip for improved Find My capabilities.

However, the publication claims that performance will be a focus this year for the Apple Watch, with the Cupertino-based tech giant planning to "heavily tout major gains in processing speed." We've previously heard a new A15-based SoC will power the Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9 will be offered in 41mm and 45mm sizes, while the Watch Ultra 2 - expected to be made with more recycled materials and have a black color option - will come in a single 49mm size.

Apple is also testing 3D-printed cases for the Watch Series 9's stainless steel models, with the Ultra line expected to make the shift starting next year.

Moreover, Apple is reportedly shifting away from some of its leather watch bands and might update or discontinue its stainless steel link bracelets.

With the event just two days away, there's little waiting to know what the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 will offer. In the meantime, you can read our Apple Watch Series 8 long-term review here if you plan to buy one.
