Archos Diamond Omega review
Display
Technically speaking, with a display diagonal of 5.73 inches, the Archos Diamond Omega is firmly in phablet territory. Then again, in practical terms, the Z17s is closer to the 5.5-inch, 16:9 golden standard in both usability and footprint. It is even a few millimeters shorter than its Z17 predecessor while managing to deliver a good 120 pixels of extra screen real estate.
What we have here is an LTPS IPS LCD. With a resolution of 1080 x 2040 pixels, it is technically fair to say it has 1080p resolution.
Our tests show that the Z17s can get reasonably bright at up to around 440 nits but we've seen way brighter LCDs.

Contrast ratio is decent. Still, it is nothing really spectacular and definitely far from the yardstick for an average 2017 flagship. The same goes for sunlight legibility.

The colors on the screen look bluish. The display has a distinct blue hue that we never really managed to quite get rid of. The Nubia ROM does offer some color tweaking options. You can adjust the overall tone and our best advice is to set the slider all the way up to warm and leave it there. Even so, it doesn't manage to entirely offset the blue tint.
There is also a trio of color saturation modes but these have a little real effect on colors. The best color accuracy we managed to get out of the Z17s has an average deltaE of 4.2 and a maximum of 8. Not too bad but not really color-accurate either. This was done using the Natural saturation mode and the warmest color setting at a screen brightness of 200 nits (about 64% brightness on our unit).
In standard mode at 100% brightness, the Archos Diamond Omega manages an average deltaE of 6.4 and a maximum of 12.8. This is mostly down to the bluish whites.
Connectivity
It should probably come as no surprise that the Z17s shares pretty much all of its connectivity options with the regular Nubia Z17. It is a Dual-SIM device taking two nano-SIMs. Worldwide band coverage across 2G, 3G and 4G is pretty solid - definitely better than the Xiaomi Mi 6, although nowhere near the OnePlus 5. The LTE is capped at Cat.9, which implies a theoretical maximum of 450 Mbps of download. No gigabit LTE support though, despite the Snapdragon 835 being perfectly capable of handling it.
Wi-Fi b/g/n over 2.4GHz and a/n/ac over 5GHz is supported. Bluetooth is still of the older 4.1 variety, so don't expect anything fancy along the lines of the OnePlus 5's aptX HD. NFC support is another check mark on the spec sheet. Positioning uses GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou satellites. There is no FM radio. Unlike the regular Z17, the Z17s does not feature an IR blaster.
The only wired interface you get is USB Type-C. It offers OTG support and can also pump out analog audio via the provided dongle.
Battery
The Archos Diamond Omega doesn't exactly impress with a massive battery capacity. Where the regular Nubia Z17 managed to cram in 3,200mAh, the Z17s has got a 3,100mAh battery. This is really odd, considering the extra millimeter of depth the Z17s has over its predecessor.
Since both phones share the exact same chipset, we expected predictable standby and 3G call time numbers. Everything did indeed fall into place nicely. The Archos Diamond Omega manages its cellular connectivity, both active and passive, as one would expect from a 2017 flagship.
As for on-screen tests, we anticipated slight decline compared to the original Z17. Partially because of the 100mAh less of battery capacity, but mostly due to the new 17:9 panel. And indeed, you can expect the Archos Diamond Omega to last a couple of hours less on average than its Z17 sibling in browsing the web or video playback. Still, 74 hours is a pretty solid endurance rating overall.
The relatively small battery pack, combined with the QuickCharge 3 technology, means you can count on blazing fast top-ups on the Nubia Z17s. During our tests we managed to get from 0% all the way up to 66% in 30 minutes, using the included QC3 charger.
Our endurance rating denotes how long a single battery charge will last you if you use the Archos Diamond Omega for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. We've established this usage pattern so our battery results are comparable across devices in the most common day-to-day tasks. The battery testing procedure is described in detail in case you're interested in the nitty-gritties. You can also check out our complete battery test table, where you can see how all of the smartphones we've tested will compare under your own typical use.
