Asus ROG Phone 2 benchmark offers first look at Snapdragon 855 Plus' performance

When the Asus ROG Phone 2 is unveiled on July 23, it will become the first handset to feature the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset. Thanks to higher clock speeds, Qualcomm was able to achieve 15% higher GPU performance as well as a small bump in the CPU’s number-crunching power.

The Plus model is based on the same hardware as the Snapdragon 855 chipset. This means one “prime” core running at 2.96GHz (up from 2.84GHz), three other big cores (the A76-based Kryo 485 Gold) at 2.42GHz and then the four small cores.

The overclock on the prime core is about 4%, the increase in single-core performance reported by Geekbench is just under 3% (compared to the Zenfone 6). The multi-core score is essentially unchanged (with all those other cores running, the prime core probably doesn’t have much headroom to hit its peak clock speeds).

The GPU is the bigger upgrade, anyway, but this benchmark doesn’t test it. Those 15% will be vital to for the first games that will make use of the 120Hz screen.

The ROG Phone 2 will come with up to 12GB of RAM – that’s exactly the version that was tested here.

Anyway, despite Qualcomm’s H2 speed gains, Apple’s Vortex core remains the single-core performance king, followed by Samsung’s M4 core. Note that Geekbench claims its scoring scale is calibrated to an Intel Core i7-6600U, which gets 4,000 on this test.
