Asus unveils four new tablets, including new Transformer Pad

Asus must have paid for excess baggage on their way to Berlin, they showed a ton of new devices – several laptops and a number of Android-powered tablets and phablets (no phones though). Let's go over the tablets and phablets in decreasing screen size, the laptops we'll cover in our blog.

Asus Transformer Pad TF701T

The new Transformer Pad (Asus dropped the 'Infinity') is one of the few Tegra 4 powered devices – that gives it four Cortex-A15 CPU cores at 1.9GHz and a 72-core GeForce GPU. The tablet has a 10.1" IGZO-TFT IPS screen with 2560 x 1600 resolution and manual color controls (white balance and saturation).

Asus Transformer Pad TF701T

The metal body of the Transformer Pad TF701T measures 8.9mm thick and tips the scales at 585g. There are two cameras – one 5MP with 1080p HDR video capture on the back and one 1.2MP on the front. The TF701T also features dual speakers with SonicMaster technology.

The tablet features advanced connectivity. It can output UHD video over a wired HDMI connection or mirror its screen wirelessly thanks to the Miracast protocol. The Mobile dock enables USB 3.0 connectivity. This dock also features a full QWERTY keyboard in the usual Transformer manner and boosts the battery life to a whopping 17 hours (up from 13 hours) (also it adds an SDXC card slot).

Asus MeMO Pad 10 and MeMO Pad 8

Both MeMO Pads share most of their specs and differ mainly in the screen size – 10" and 8" obviously. Their screens are IPS LCD and have WXGA resolution (1280 x 800). The tablets are powered by a quad-core processor at 1.6GHz but Asus is light on details as to the core architecture.

Asus MeMO Pad 10

The smaller one, the MeMO Pad 8, is very compact, measuring just 127mm. It weighs 350g, while the Pad 10 model tips the scales at 522g. The tablets have dual SonicMaster speakers, just like the Transfomer.

The Pad 8 packs a 5MP main camera, but its bigger sibling only gets a 2MP camera on the back. Both can shoot 720p video and have 1.2MP cameras on the front. There's 8GB of built-in storage (the Pad 10 has a 16GB version too) and there's a microSD card slot if that's not enough.

Battery life is rated at 9 hours for the MeMO Pad 8 and half an hour longer for the MeMO Pad 10.

Asus Fonepad 7

The Asus Fonepad 7 is an Intel-powered 7" tablet – Atom Z2560 at 1.6GHz running Android 4.2 to be precise. The screen is a 7" IPS LCD with WXGA resolution (1280 x 800) and has a smudge-resistant coating.

The Fonepad 7 measures 10.5mm in thickness and weighs 340g (that's almost as much as the 8" MeMO Pad 8). It too has dual SonicMaster speakers.

The 5MP main camera can shoot 100 photos in a burst and record 1080p video and as with the rest, there's a 1.2MP front-facing camera. Storage comes in 8/16/32GB versions, expandable by a microSD card slot.

Connectivity is handled by DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps down, 5.76Mbps up) and there's full 3G telephony support (complete with a noise cancelling mic). Miracast handles wireless TV out duties. The battery has 3,950mAh capacity and is rated for 35 days of standby, 28 hours of 3G talk time or 10 hours of video playback.
