Many users are asking if J7 is a better option. Let me explain it once and for all.
J7 has far better processor and it is better ONLY if you play games on HIGH settings, if you do not, then go for Zenfone Max. It gives you decent game experience and excellent overall performance. Here are some key points why I PERSONALLY think that Max is better.
- Max has screen protection (VERY IMPORTANT!)
- Max has more RAM!
- Max has far better battery life!
- Max has secondary noise cancellation mic
- Max is cheaper!
- Max is slightly louder than J7 (but they are not extremely loud. Max is average, J7 is below average)
- Max has smoother performance due to its ZenUI.
- Max has slightly better signal reception (data, wi-fi, gps).
Both phones have similar camera and build quality. Max is slightly heavier and bulkier because its monster battery, but that is not deal breaker and I like it. Many people say that Max has bloatware, but instead of bothering me I find those apps useful. If you do not want them, you can disable them and you are good to go.
I wanted to buy J7 also but I'm extremely happy with my Max. If I lose it tomorrow I would buy it again. I'm using it around 5 months and haven't experienced even slightest problem.
Do not listen to the people who are here just to complain.
I hope this helps.

This phone is good at everything except games and its slow charging time...but I don't mind since i'm not a gamer myself...and slow charging time can be rectified by buying a good fast charger...very handy when travelling, no need to worry abt the battery...both camera are decent for social media photography...I LOVE MY "BEAST" ZENFONE MAX...

The phone is Good i am using it almost from 6months but it has now turned very slow after playing Asphalt and also using memory card with 64gb space.
If you donot play games then this is the best fit, else try Samsung.

I bought Asus Zenfone Max ZC500KL last 05, April 2016. Asus Zenfone 5 A500KL (2014 model) is much faster than Asus Zenfone Max ZC550KL. I can tell because I played with my friend using Clash Royale using this two phones. (FYI: I also owned a Zenfone 5 A500KL after I lost it, this was the phone I considered replacing) You can see the difference between the gameplay smoothness which is the Zenfone Max is inferior than the Zenfone 5.
From the 3 games I downloaded after a Factory Reset just to be sure the lagging doesn't come from the other apps installed, 2 out of 3 games where really lagging.
1.) Sandstorm: Pirates War (New Game) - Lag Meter is 4 out of 5
2.) Minions Paradise - Lag Meter is 2 out of 5
3.) Clash Royale - Not actual lagging but the smoothness of the game is inferior
I can also felt lagging after a reboot, don't know why, but I followed what the ASUS Support have emailed me, that they suggest that I do a factory reset... and I did, I even update the system first before trying installing anything but it never solved my problem, after that ASUS no longer replied to my emails or complains.
Overall is a good phone with a lot of good features, great camera, good battery-life... but DON'T BUY this if your someone who uses his/her phone for gaming purposes... Just don't, the only thing left for me to solve this is to resell the phone and buy a new one...

Like Hiroga Katageri said, this phone is a bit difficult to use with one hand. Budget wise, this phone is a money saver because you don't need a powerbank anymore (the phone itself is the powerbank :) ). It costs around 8,500 - 7,995 pesos in the Philippines. The camera is identical to the Zenfone Laser 5.5" variant.
