My Z10 unexpectedly bricked (have 3 of them in the family)- So replaced mine with a new DTEK50 - since pretty much everything OS and accessory wise is Android or Apple - so figured I would have to move there eventually anyway. (Found many Apps I needed were never made for BB platform (Honeywell TC 2.0), and many more soon to be discontinued -i.e. What’s App, Etc.)

Love the phone itself - Nothing bad to say about it - Excellent features, sound, build etc. - The only unforeseen with the hardware was that it uses a Nano Sim (smaller), not a Micro like the Z10 - so that caused a week’s extra delay once I had the phone, for my carrier to send me a Nano Sim. Oh, the other thing I will miss is that there is no Micro HDMI port - if that’s important to you (I found it useful on occasion) - in fact there are no ports other than the headphone jack, and the Micro USB Charge Port.

What I am having difficulty with - is the learning curve to get accustomed to the Android OS (after BB OS10) - they should call it Google OS - because it seems riddled with Google with everything you try to use - Google Maps, Google Chrome, Google Pics, Google Drive, Etc. Etc. (Downloaded a .pdf, and it put it in Google drive, without me asking it to .. not used to that, but hopefully it can be changed somewhere in settings - I prefer it to go to my SD card Only. If its touted as the most secure SmartPhone - I sure don’t like Google getting a piece of it every time I try to use a function - Maybe that is just Android in General - as this is my first experience with it.

Phone Interface is way different - not as seem-less or intuitive as BB10 for accessing contacts, adding new callers etc. (Maybe I just haven’t figured it out yet, but honestly, a little frustrating, and somewhat disappointing - I hoping that I’m missing something that will improve my experience there. Hub seems like it’s no longer the focal point - just another APP, so when accessing messages in the HUB - the Gmail APP keeps popping up, and makes things complicated vs. the BB10 OS experience. It also seems I get dual notifications for emails once for Gmail, and another for the Hub for each message (Different chime tones) - likely something to be corrected somewhere in settings. The thing is - I got a new phone to be able to conduct business and use as phone since mine bricked - and hadn’t planned on the challenge of having to learn all the quirks and quarks of a new OS to try to figure out how to simply make phone calls, and manage emails, files etc. That being said - put my 64GB SD card from my BB Z10 into the DTEK50, and it fits ok, just haven’t found an App to be able to access it yet, without a concern of it re-formatting my card, and me losing all the data??? - Of course that is going to take a little more time and research to figure it out.

Hope this helps someone out there. Still glad I made the choice - and Love the phone itself - Pictures are not stunning - especially in low light - but at least functional for most purposes. Accessories are somewhat limited (like an Otterbox - NOT) - but you can find some accessories for the Alcatel Idol 4 - I guess which is basically what this phone is, with a few software tweaks from BB.

      The market wants cheaper handsets.

It's an idol 4 minus slippery glass back and some extra hardware to secure the device. That's a good thing.

I have used BB Z3 and Classic. I like the "Warm white" display brightness it has. (yellow color display brightness). Does anybody know is BB DTEK50 also has same "Warm white vs Cold white" display brightness balance settings?

BB is a great brand, but the company that produced it is unable to market it properly. Perhaps because Canadians are good people do not know how to lie so they are not successful marketers.

battery is dismal. should be at least 3000mAh at current standards

I can see blackberry fans and cheerleaders biggin up this average device, this is not 2011, blackberry has lost the plot ages ago and can never get back it's mojo, top phone manufacturers keep getting better and better and new companies like Xiaomi keep on releasing cheaper phones with premium specs. This BlackBerry DTEKT50 or any other blackberry device stands no chance unless they wanna start selling their devices under $160 then maybe, they will get back a few customers that they have lost although I don't think the US senate will be on that list because they have dropped blackberry for good and will never look back.

Good phone. BlackBerry is right up there with the Nexus line in terms of backporting security updates.

No finger-print reader like Nexus, but expandable storage via microSD unlike Nexus.

Probably the best mid-range phone if you want SD card and timely updates.

On the other hand I see this phone little more practical for me than the S5 I have now. I guess this phone can help me a lot if blackberry assures that its keyboard can be substituted by SwiftKey as I have doubt about it even it's android phone from blackberry company. I see its weight very attracting feature however its battery is disappointing.
