Check out the 3D Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner of the vivo iQOO 8 Pro

Yordan, 18 August 2021

Yesterday we saw the arrival of the iQOO 8 Pro and vivo claimed the phone had a 3D Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Initially, we overlooked this hardware spec because smartphone companies tend to overexaggerate for marketing purposes, but a video review of the scanner revealed plenty of impressive features.

The scanner is now 578 sq. mm in size, a lot bigger than any other on the market. It is also faster than any we’ve seen in a smartphone, and on top of that, it now reads more than one finger - a lot of these functions were already demoed back in 2018 on the vivo APEX Concept smartphone.

It is worth mentioning that only the vivo iQOO 8 Pro has this under-display fingerprint scanner, the iQOO 8 gets a regular one that is still pretty fast, but pedestrian in comparison. The sensor is not just super fast and extremely big, it is also pretty easy to set up - a one-second-long press is enough for the phone to learn the fingerprint.

This is a lot better than the current solution where you have to tap the small sensor multiple times under different angles so the scanner remembers all the positions the finger is placed on top of it.

Hopefully, vivo will bring the iQOO 8 Pro outside China and global fans will also get the chance to enjoy a fingerprint technology that is long overdue for a major upgrade.
