China-bound Motorola XT806 does both CDMA and GSM, 720p video

11 August, 2010

The Motorola XT806 is bound for China and is one of the few remaining flip phones - but it's no ordinary flip phone. It runs Android, has dual-mode CDMA/GSM support and captures 720p videos with its 5MP camera.

A feature that is very important to Chinese customers is the handwriting recognition, which suggests a resistive display. But if it's like the Motorola MT810, it might have capacitive touch functionality too.

The Motorola XT806, like the other MING phones puts a new spin on the old flip form factor. The flip is transparent and you can see the display underneath. On the MT810 it served as a capacitive digitizer and rumor has it that it even turns the display into a 3D capable unit. There's no info on whether the flip on the XT806 can do those things, though.

Anyway, the Motorola XT806 screen is a 3.6" TFT unit with 854x480 pixels resolution. The Motorola XT806 is powered by a 600MHz TI OMAP 3430 running Android (version unknown). It's primarily a CDMA2000 device for China Telecom but it does support GSM/GPRS/EDGE too - though chances of seeing it travel West are low.

The Motorola XT806 supports Wi-Fi, but lacks GPS. The 5 MP camera comes with auto-focus and the aforementioned 720p video recording.

The Motorola XT806 is not official yet, so some features might change or new ones get added (here's hoping for the capacitive/3D display thingy).
