Galaxy AI is coming to 2023 Samsung flagships tomorrow

Peter, 27 March 2024

If you are using a 2023 flagship Galaxy devices and are feeling left out from the AI fun that Galaxy S24 owners are having, tomorrow you will be able to see what all the fuss is about yourself.

The Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra and S23 FE, as well as the foldable Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 will receive a One UI 6.1 update tomorrow that will enable the new Galaxy AI features.

Note to US readers: this is for phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, UScellular and other carriers, as well as ones bought from Amazon, Best Buy and other retailers. Other unlocked S23/Z phones will have to wait until April. By the looks of it, no such limitations apply to European units.

For tablets, the Wi-Fi versions of the Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+ and Tab S9 Ultra are also getting it tomorrow, while the 5G-enabled variants will receive the update in April. The Tab S9 FE duo is left out, however.

The features include:

  • Circle to Search with Google: this is similar to Google Lens, but easier to access
  • Live Translate: real-time two-way voice voice translation for phone calls (with optional live captions too)
  • Generative Edit: resize and remove objects and fill in the background with zero Photoshop skills required
  • Chat Assist: this is for the Samsung keyboard, it offers translation, advice on writing style and spelling and grammar tweaks

Additionally, Edit Suggestion and Instant Slow-Mo are mentioned in the German press release (but not the US one). The same goes for Note Assist (automatic summaries and translations of notes) and Transcribe Assist (turn audio recordings into text).

Note that the features are free to use until the end of 2025. It’s not clear how much they will cost afterwards (Samsung’s official answer is as vague as it gets). Also, all these beside Chat Assist are cloud services, so they require an Internet connection to do their magic.

Samsung is apparently working on porting Galaxy AI to the S22 series, but it’s not clear if and when that will be released.
