Optical zoom lenses use multiple physical lenses that move in and out to physically project different size images on the sensor (film in the old days). Phone cameras use fixed lens arrangements and digitally zoom by cropping the pixels on the sensor. Most high end phones use various software techniques to make the digital zoom look sharper.

Almost 1/3rd are Samsung ... moreYou are wrong here, Top phones always used Sony sensors, iPhones uses them, Huawei always used Sony till ban, OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi flagships, Pixels always used Sony expect with Pixel 6 and even Samsung themselves using Sony sensors on their flagships, besides main sensor, all other 3 sensors on the back of Ultra are Sony sensors, same with S22 and S22+. Lower tier phones ten to go with Samsung sensors because of lower price.

I thought at the first these periscope lenses may have fixed few focal lengths in the middle.. And I thought this for quiet some time. Then I got to know that... No man.. That's not the case..
It's just one focal length.. What a bummer😑😑
But still considering the size and thickness,,,, I really appreciate it..
Speacially as many brands are including 2 zoom lens..
I guess it would be best if
A phone had 10x optical lens like S22 ultra and then continuous zoom like Sony Xperia 1 IV.

It's not a true zoom lens.
Zoom lenses has zoom range. Lenses that doesn't have this are simply fixed lenses.

How is it true zoom !! It says 10x zoom and counting the lowest focal length as base. Same as others.
Are you saying Samsung S22 ultra should say it has 20X zoom instead of 10x as the base focal length is 13mm ?
If not I don't see any point arguing. All are same... Single lens are compared with base focal length and multiple's are with the primary one.
That's why when you open the wide angle it shows 0.6x or 0.7x

But jokes aside, it's that pe... moreYes, of course. When a new phone comes out bragging a 10x optical "zoom," I know exactly that it's just a fake zoom (involves two separate lenses). I always read the footnotes and confirm that they always divide the tele with the ultrawide FL. That's silly in my opinion. I don't like to enforce it.
The only phone I've seen with a "true zoom" is this old Galaxy S4 Zoom:

Of course Sony is way better overall for image sensor compared to Samsung. Half of the camera industry use Sony sensors... But when it comes to tiny smartphone sensors.. They both are neck and neck. Sony itself has used many Samsung sensor in it's own mobile in the past and will use in the future. Also it's not just the sensor that makes the photo look good. I bet at least 1/4th of the components used to make a camera for smartphone uses Samsung components if they are for flagship phones. So, you can call Sony better if you like but don't even try to bring OmniVision here.
Also Pixel 6 pro has periscope..
Don't just read GSMARENA specs and pretend to be an expert. 😂

Not just smartphone camera... Other cameras also have confusing zoom capability. Digital camera works kinda same way you described. Others like APS-C or weird panasonic or Fijifilm weird FL number... Best way to get is to convert it to 35mm equivalent.

The Guy, 30 Sep 2022IS it so hard to install a x10 optical zoom? Not at all. You'll just have to add an ultrawide camera with 5mm focal length then add a telephoto with 50mm focal length. That is 50mm/5 = 10x optical "zoom." It's just that it won't give you a proper telephoto reach. That's how they calculate zoom factor these days. Tele/main focal length. Thinking that we are all st.upid.
