hi pixel fam
been a Samsung user since note 4, currently on s23 FE. The phone is decent but the battery is not up to par and I haven't been able to fall in love with it in the 6 months I have had it. I can trade it for a pixel 8 pro.
Need suggestions of current pixel 8 users. is it a good decision? how is the battery? I have heard the biometrics are okay, especially the FP sensor could have been better. Any reviews/suggestions will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

Is there a way to get rid of the widget "at a glance" from the home screen in the default launcher?
Any way to add a widget (eh. Calendar) at full screen removing the search bar and the fix apps at the bottom to use that space.
Do we need to install an alternative launcher or it can be handled somehow with the default launcher settings?

Without a Google One subscription, is it mandatory to backup a picture in order to save it after using Magic Editor?
Or is Magic Editor free to use with no restrictions - no backup required - even without a Google One/Gemini Advanced plan?

camera comparison.
Because you guys have been mislead in the chat.
The google pixel 8 pro will have better detail, seeing through bright and dark areas in a single photo, it doesn't get blown out as much as a Samsung does, it smashes the competition with not even a chance of Samsung, Xiaomi, realme, poco, literally any other android, they are not pulling through, especially for the price. (1X PHOTO ONLY)
BUT!
the video on the pixel will not keep up, Samsung, Xiaomi, iPhone, etc, they all slaughter the google pixel.
Although the pixel has great background blur and subject focus, the pixel will remain the best 1x photo. Yet, losing in every other category.
I like the thought of video boost, but it's a bit clunky and chunky, taking large amounts of my time, only to get rid of the grainy details in low light. At least that's what I've used it for.
The baked in camera app does not allow for high fps recording.
They have slow motion, but no setting to record a normal speed video with 90-120hz, I have to use a video editing software for that.
I've noticed that sometimes the video will stutter, I have no idea why. Even though nothing is running in the background.
Samsung and Xiaomi are better with high amounts of zoom, the google pixel 8 pro however will not keep up at all
If you have any questions, please ask me, I would be happy to give you an android enthusiasts opinion. #TeamAndroid

Sideloading is not the best experience on this device, takes good photos and videos of course, it lacks optimization in many areas, often leaving the experience cluttered with bugs. The battery life is great, no complaints with the charging speed, the display resolution is alright.
I would only recommend this device for a simple device user who needs a reliable camera with good battery life.
It has video out through the USB C port, that's always a good feature.
It's a great device, but it's definitely not for me. My favorite games have become unplayable, including every single controller supported VR game ever create for android, also made, unplayable.
I also use douyin, I can not install douyin (sideloading is unavailable as well)(chinese tiktok is unavailable)
Oh, and I always forget, there is a temperature reader on the back, it only works for about a two inch distance, but it's a cool little gimmick I can show to my friends.
I can see the screen very clearly during the day while it's on it's peak brightness setting.
In short, It's a very ambitious device, held back by its lack of features and or the limitations of said features. Lacking in BASIC optimization, freedoms, customization. It feels like the main purpose of this device, is having a good reliable camera setup, staying connected, nothing more.
I hate the U.I, it's littered with bugs.
Older pixel devices interest me more, they went in the wrong direction here.

Anonymous, 24 Feb 2025Bought this device a couple of days ago for £320 off Amazon... moreSo you mean you like the device mostly due to cameras and battery life.
The software features you mentioned aren't new.
It definitely looks like a good deal for the price you got.

Bought this device a couple of days ago for £320 off Amazon (for that price i had to take a chance), I've had a pixel 6 pro before and it was honestly awful...horrible device to use with too many software and hardware issues so was incredibly sceptical going back but I've got to say, the pixel 8 pro is an absolute joy to use and has been near flawless.
Some really useful features for cameras, general software features and having emergency SoS and crash detection features makes your mind more at ease.
Camera quality is awesome, every camera is just top quality and captures the moment so quickly. Battery and standby is really really good, be nice to have a bit quicker charging but it's not a life changing issue. Also possibly the most beautiful phone on the market... Just be careful, it's slippy lol.
Would happily recommend this phone to anyone, especially at the price I paid and am happy Google got the pixel line back on track.

Hey gsm, you've forgot to add that this phone has emergency SoS with crash detection and I'm sure can record spatial audio including playback through phone speakers (adjusts audio based on microphones adjusting to acoustic area). Pretty sweet features!
