Gurman: Apple is working on a new iMac with an M3 chip, a 32" iMac planned for 2024/2025

Peter, 10 July 2023

Apple’s iMac is fairly popular because it offers a clean all-in-one setup for desk workers that don’t need the high-end performance of a Mac Pro. However, there is currently only one model and it is already getting long in the tooth – the 24” iMac from 2021 that is powered by the original M1.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a more powerful version, one that will use the upcoming Apple M3 chip (3nm instead of 5nm like current M1 and M2 chips). That one will still be the same size, however.

Cupertino is also developing a larger 32” iMac, according to Gurman. This will be a high-end offering similar to the Apple Pro Display XDR, which has a 32” IPS LCD panel, 6K resolution (16:9) and 10-bit colors. For comparison, the current 24” iMac has a 24” 4.5K display (16:9), again with 10-bit colors.

The 32” iMac will not be available anytime soon, however, as the design process is only now getting started. The current prediction is that it will be unveiled in late 2024 or even in 2025. The 24” M3 model should arrive early next year.

There used to be small 21.5” iMacs too, by the way, but there’s no word on Apple going below 24” with the new models.
