Anonymous, 20 Apr 2025Everyone seems to want a security patch every month ,but is... moreYour observation is mostly right, security patch" is a bit of exageration, this is something that could be interpreted as very bad, that all android phones have serious security issues ar the core that are discovered montly and are being patched. From my experience this is not the case, most of the security patches are not actually security patches but more like updating phones DB to recognize new threats, a thing that is actually important for all people with all sorts of knowlege, but very important for the one with lack of knowledge in the filed.

Minu, 15 Mar 2025Given that it's an AMOLED phone, it isn't PWM-fre... moreI asked Hmd about the Pwm and got an interesting response (as follows)
" While we do not officially market the Skyline as utilizing full DC dimming, the display control system used does employ a more sophisticated dimming method than standard PWM. This approach minimizes the high-frequency on/off switching typically associated with PWM, which can often be a source of discomfort for individuals with sensitivity to flicker. Our goal is to provide a smoother, more eye- comfortable visual experience- especially at lower brightness levels where PWM is usually most noticeable. Of course, sensitivity to flicker and screen modulation varies significantly from person to person.“
I tested the phone myself (brand new on android 14) using another phones camera and it does indeed have some kind of dc dimming but only above a certain percent brightness (around 40%), below that it changes from 1 or 2 thin purple lines (that change speed when selecting different refresh rates) to around 15 to 17 thicker black lines that don't change size hugely when lowering the brightness (unlike Samsung that engulf the screen).
Anyway I hope this helps

It's like a cross between the Leica Leitz and obi worldphone.
Personally it feels like Hmd are taking up the slack left behind by blackberry and htc, who always tried something new and different .
Good for them I say , so many phone look the same nowadays.
All we need now is a more unique android experience with hmd's personal touches rather than relying on stock.
(nobody wants stock android they all just got confused with bloatware and thought stock meant it didn't have any).

Most if not all modern OSes arent really unsafe as long as you have good internet knowledge.
There is built in security features on most for a reason. I still wouldnt rely on them because bad people evolve viruses to bypass security pretty rapidly, they do help though.

I wouldn't buy HMD anyway. Theres members in my family who use HMD phones, they're middle of the road from what i've seen.
Maybe its just because i've been using Samsung since 2022.. (Came from LG)

It's like some 5 year old tried origami to a phone and failed. Who thought "Guys, guys, what if we have a rectangular body and a normal smartphone screen?" Who thought of this?

Most web browsers provide enough security settings and you're generally safe with decently popular apps on the Play Store. So, depending on what you're doing, even a 10-year old Android isn't unsafe. They probably still get those Play Protect updates, or whatever they are called. If an app is compatible with the older Android, you're good to go. However, it's best to avoid using banking/financial apps on extremely old phones, just to be safe.

Other people were saying android is always patched by Google themselves and even a phone 10 years old is relatively safe and that most attacks are done though the cloud , Google services or other apps that the system patches have no relevance to.
I'm personally scared of updating to latest androids OS as they always seem to have issues and more and more apps are becoming unavailable as there no longer compatible (couldn't Android offer backwards compatibility and run them in a sandbox environment ).
I hated it when material you and scoped storage came out , and
recently Google are even removing the 3g/4g/5g network selection on some phones .
But as you say it's also about respect for the people who have used their hard earned money to buy these phones and having an transparent comparable update policy should be included and upheld .

The thing is that there are bad actors out there who keep inventing ways to cause problems. As soon as new vulnerabilities are discovered, or new ways of being attacked are found, security patches are issued.
And it's not about wanting the latest update, it's about accountability. If you promise something, ask money for it, but don't deliver it satisfactorily, people are going to question you because they're your customers and have paid you a premium for your product.

HMD used to update its products monthly. Now they want to do it quarterly. And they are failing in individual EU countries.
HMD is not serious. They only release security updates because other manufacturers do it too. HMD knows they can't pass a product review without a proper update plan. And they tell their plan to the press and YouTube “journalists”.
If you ask HMD support “I'm in country X with provider Y”, HMD can't (!) answer if you should get a software that is not older than 3 months.

For users not receiving updates: I had a similar issue with the Nokia XR21 Limited Edition here in the UK, where I was stuck on Android 13 and the May 2024 patch.
I finally received Android 14 and the Jan 2025 security patch 8-9 months later. What would have helped is if there was some transparency about the reason for the delay, was it carrier or regulatory for example?
Play System Updates should still be available for download so I wouldn't worry too much about security implications unless you are actively engaging in questionable sites and apps.
