In fact, the Kirin 970 performs between SD 835 and 845. So, in real life performance, A2 can come nowhere near Honor Play. BUT, unfortunately, Huawei has stopped providing bootloader unlock codes for its smartphones - which means that no custom ROM support and no root. If you are only concerned about customizing the looks, then EMUI has tons of features in it - like changing icons, themes, etc. Also XDA support for Mi devices >>>> Huawei phones.

Best Phone ever!!! Asphalt 9 , Arena of valor , Pubg and alot game so smooth, battery last for 7~9 hr gaming non stop. If you phone heat up so fast while playing game , Go to Game Suite app it already installed then turn off Game Acceleration it will reduce fps abit (example Arena of valor normally 60fps after off it became 50~54 fps instead) it less heat than before. Love this phone so much.

I am very confused between Honor Play and Mi A2. I will give my final vote to availability of Custom ROMs for the device. Do Huawei devices get custom ROMs as much as Mi devices?
I am interested in custom ROM as I am a bit skeptical about EMUI because I haven't tried it before and it seems just too much feature bloated and doesn't look nice to me(Just my personal opinion).
BTW is there any Theme Engine inside EMUI? Like, to change icons, color scheme etc?
