spencer, 13 Aug 2008Thanks NormanD for your advice. I've download SpoonAlarm v2... more@spencer: From what I see as listed from the contents of the file you have downloaded is IS already the SpoonAlarm.CAB that you are looking at. Yes - if you are using WinRAR on your PC, it LISTS .CAB files as .RAR ones, and one can open and look at what is inside, but they are still CAB files. So, please check the extension of the file you have downloaded - it should be .CAB and not .RAR. (Tip: If you have not it tuned on, then go to your Windows File Manager > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and there UNcheck the 'Hide extensions for known file types' checkbox. It is quite useful to be able to look at the extensions at times.)

Anonymous, 01 Jan 1970Thanks NormanD for your advice. I've download SpoonAlarm v2.0 (295 KB) and also found a simple installation instructions in one website. However, I don't see any cab files inside the folder after unzipping it. This is what inside:
      INTERO~1.003
      MICROS~3.001
      mscorlib.002
      SPOONA~1.000
      SPOONA~1.005
      SPOONA~1.006
      SPOONA~1.007
      SPOONS~1.004
      _setup.xml
Would you be so kind to give me some more hint on how to install the files into my device. What is needed to run the cab file? Is the cab file embedded inside just one of the above files ? What is required to run the cab file ?
      Thank you very much !

      Installation:
      - Copy the SpoonAlarm.CAB file to your windows mobile device.
      - Run the CAB file.
      - Accept the installation questions and warnings...

      Activation:
      - Open the Programs window from the start menu.
      - Select: SpoonAlarm.
      - The SpoonAlarm will be activated.

Byryn, 12 Aug 2008I have recently got the 612c. Great stuff in all. However, ... more@Byryn: Unfortunaely it is the headpiece that causes the trouble most of the time. There is some problem with the wiring and the insulation on the upper side of the 11-pin USB connector the iPAQ 6xx utilizes. I bought mine 614c with the earpiece already recalled with good $90 discount :) (...and already bought for the same price a BT stereo headset)

I have recently got the 612c. Great stuff in all. However, I have all of a sudden lost all audio out on the ear peice (headset and speaker still work). Working with HP to resolve but i dont think it is hardware related, as it happened without any bumps or even usage. One phone call it worked and the next it didn't... Will update the ROM tonight but any assistance would be great.
          Ta :)

@Mikey: Let's compare the dimensions of the 614c - 117 x 60.3 x 17.5 mm and of k700i - 99 x 46 x 19 mm. Yes, the iPAQ is longer and wider by 15-16mm, but it is not bulky at all and fits very well in ones hand or pocket. What is more - the wider size makes enough room for a wider keyboard which is very comfortable during single-handed operations (plus the option to tap on the screen with your thumb).

@spencer: Yes, you are right that the alarms are too quiet and one can't select an MP3 file for the alarm sound using the in-built iPAQ menus. However there is a FREE program - SpoonAlarm v2.0 (Google! it - this one is easy to find) that corrects both issues.

Ain't this device too huge for day to day use? I'm currently using my old SE K700i, and I know that if I go for such feature-rich device like this it's gotta be bigger, but is it still comfortable to use, e.g one-handed typing while walking on the street, or driving by bus.

The problem with this phone is the built-in alarm ringtones are all to quiet and low pitched. This is the case even if they are set to the highest volume. p.s you can't set your own music(mp3) as an alarm to wake you up in the morning. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Alexander, 04 Aug 2008I have two questions to 610c users: 1: Is it only A-gps or... more@Alexander: Please read the previous user replies - it had been clearly said several times that A-GPS is only an useful OPTION and ADDITION to the usual GPS funcionality. So most of the times one will use GPS with its 'normal' function, but if there are A-GPS servers available in the area you CAN (but this is NOT mandatory!) connect to such a server via GRPS and use some extra guidance.

@TJ: While the in-built WMPlayer cannot handle youtube streaming, there is no problem to install the FREE 3rd party player TCPMP (short for The Core Pocket Media Player) of version 0.71RC1 and add to it a streaming video plug-in (Hint: search with Google for the file TCPMP_and_Video_Bundle.rar).

@Anonimous: Currently there are no known virii that can infest and harm a WindowsMobile system.

@Pavle: There is already available an accessory called MiniUSB-Y-Cable, available for the QTEK phones, which is plugged in the iPAQ 610c miniUSB port and from it stretch two short cables - one with another miniUSB(F) connector and another - with a 3.5mm stereo phone jack. Search eBay for it - it is quite common - simply search for QTEK accessory - NOT for iPAQ.

@Catalin: Yes there is no problem to replace your polish ROM with an English one. The simpliest way around is to visit the forum on the site 4pda.ru and do a search for the words '614c' and 'ROM'. The site and forum are in Russian, but there is no need to know the language - the links for download are obvious. There is an even better news - a Russian Engineer had made a 'cooked' ROM, from which had been removed all the HP junk programs as 'Live Update', etc. A better Bluetooth driver had been added, and the low sound level problem had been partially solved via a registry hack. The XT9 word completion probles had been resolved too. So the installation of this custom-made ROM is highly recommended.

great product. really advance and highly configurable. not for a novice though. hardware is just great. most of the problems are caused by the operating system ie. wm6. the default configuration sucks big time. you need at least 2 days to customize the setting and learn how to use this device efficiently. but once you know what fit you best, you can redo the configuration in just 20 minuts. once the customization is done, this phone rocks like hell. this product comes with 4points ipaqchoice. you may spend these point at www.ipawchoice.com. i suggest you choose "ilauncher". i didn't find other software usefull. there are many free software available. my favorites are, s2u2, s2p, total commander, wengophone, turbogps, wm5torage, hbutton, sptimesync, tehwol, pocketcm keyboard, pocket digital clock (pdc). with s2p this phone even acts like an ipod. ohh, did i mention that i rarely need stylus to oprate this phone? there are a few minor things i don't like about this phone. the key pad is too flat. in darkness you can't feel which key you are pressing. the 3-Way Thumb-Wheel cannot be pressed easily with your thumb, which make it useless most of the time. and there are a few more design problem i really don't care about. i've read that some of you complain about the battery. in my opinion, i really don't think other pda phones can do better than this one. what about the size? i would say it fit me well. i don't want a phone to be too slim. what i care most about is the ergonomy, that it fit your hand nicely and let you operate quickly and efficiently. ohh, i almost forgot. a seperate 3.5/2.5mm audio jack would be nice to have, so that you can listen to music quietly while charging up.

My bigest problem is battery life, i am waiting for this phone and i have been using rw 6815, it is slightly heavy tho the screen easily gets scratched , i wana know if this 164 has better batt life before i lay my hands on mine..
