Once you have google maps on the phone:
Either:
1. Select you location and it will find you automatically, without internet.
2. Go to Menu while on Google Maps and press 'Use GPS'. Once that is ticked, you're set to go.

it is quite durable.
i have dropped it at least few times and my two cousins girls are much younger and have dropped it far more times. it is true that there some scratches on the edges, not on the screen and not damaging the material. none of 3 phones have been damaged.
