It says Quadband GSM support. Now why would it have that if it were not to make phone calls with.

Well looking at "2008-02-13 01:54 4PHD"'s entry. It would appear that it does make phone calls, but I just got off the phone with HTC teck support in the US and I was told that it will not make phone calls. This is a very confusing area that I think now it doesn't matter what we the people think it does until it comes out and we have confirmed proof that it either does or does not.
Me personally, I need a phone and a computer in one. I really hope it does do both.

This can easily be an awesome gaming computer, for games that can run on most simple computers. Its got VGA out so you can even hook it up to a portable projector or anything. Bluetooth, so you can have bluetooth keyboard/mouse and headset...its pretty much the Ultimage Computer Phone

Yes it is a great idea! But it is basically a lap top. I wouldn't want to have this in my pocket. It would be nice for a buisness man that travels alot and needs internet access or something like that

It can make voice calls, but only via head set, here is reply from HTC when I wrote them regarding this question.

This phone can make calls. Dude there is now way u can send an SMS withut having a network operator !!!! wake up !!!!!!!!!!!
(Maybe look at its 2G and 3G networks ?????????????? LOL ?????)
THE HTC shift is a super-phone. I think its the future.
The problems that i see in it are the fact that it has a miserable camera, and, obviously the price tag thats gonna come with it.
The nokia N810, on the other hand, is NOT a phone.

did this phone win phone of the year award?because it should have.i also think that htc should do a combination with sony ericsson preferably a sony"W"series "HTC" combination. just imagine a virtual walkman computer in your pockect.tell me what you all think.because i have alot more tech ideas

Those who insist that you can make a GSM Phone Call, please let me know which page in the manual guides the user to make a phone call.

Errrmm... No... !
It's not mobile phone!
You can put a SIM card but only for data connections.
If you want voice calls intall SKYPE and connect via 3G or WIFI.
So, before you buy, think if is that what you want ;)

Execelent phone capabilities.
Voice is just as good as any cellular.
except you must use a bluetoth headset
of some sort, to be able to use it at
its optimal.
Those claiming its not haveing voice capeabilities,
should investigate a little more, perhaps
contact htc themselfs.
Windows Mobile + Bluetooth yeah thats usefull
on a laptop. no its not, its execelent when
in cellular mode, how ewer the problem
is that it proberly comes in different versions
depending on locations and isp/providers.

This is not a phone. It is effectively a laptop with built in datacard.

I dont know why it cant make calls???
It just a small expensive laptop only but it has 2 more feature,, GPS and a touch screen
and its battary life is 2 hours working on vista!!!!

Its seems to be very good phone I have Nokia N93 and this phone will be next for me
but i am afraid of some things
1-The battary life while i am working on windows and open many aplications....
2-Can i setup any (.exe) files like winamp.exe or any other aplication like my pc
3-what about the vedio call camera does it works to still pictures and vedio recorder also?
4-Can i hold it in my pocket or its need a carrier?
