Huawei announces refreshed (2020) MateBook D laptops for the UK

Enrique, 04 February 2020

Huawei is launching two new laptops in the UK: the Huawei MateBook D 14 (2020) and MateBook D 15 (2020). Huawei already announced these two laptops in Shanghai last November, so today’s news announces availability and pricing for the United Kingdom. Contrary to its Chinese launch, only a single configuration of each size will be available for the UK in Space Gray.

Starting with the displays, both laptops come with Full HD (1080 x 1920 px) IPS displays with a standard widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio. The MateBook D 15 comes with a 15.6-inch panel and MateBook D 14 sports a sleeker 14-inch display. Each laptop has an 87% and 84% screen to body ratio, respectively. The design of both hinges allow either MateBook D to be opened almost flat to 178 degrees.

The MateBook D 14 measures 322.5 x 214.8 x 15.9 mm (4.8mm display) and the MateBook D 15 comes in at 357.8 x 229.9 x 16.9 mm with a 5.3mm display.

In the processing department, AMD powers these computers with the 12nm AMD Ryzen 5 3500U mobile processor with integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics. In addition, the new Huawei Shark Fin 2.0 setup offers improved cooling over the predecessors. Both machines come with 8GB of dual-channel DDR4 RAM and both include a 65W USB-C charger.

Both laptops come with three full-size USB-A ports (2 x USB 2.0 and 1 x USB 3.0), an HDMI port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB-C port.

OneHop interface with Huawei and Honor phones are also featured here. Tapping on the laptop’s NFC sticker will instantly connect a phone and quickly transfer files, fire up the mobile’s hotspot, control your Huawei phone, and share a clipboard.

Here’s where the specs start to get a little confusing. The D 15 model comes with 256GB of storage, but the D 14 comes with 512GB. Also, the 14-inch model comes with more battery capacity (56 Wh) than the 15-inch (42 Wh). Since 14-inch laptops sometimes manage to sneak into the “Ultra-portable demographic”, more value is placed on it.

As far as pricing goes, you’ll expect to pay more for the MateBook D 14 since it comes with a larger battery and additional internal storage – that one is priced at £649. Meanwhile, the MateBook D 15 will retail at £599. Both Windows 10 machines are arriving on February 21. Availability for other Western markets is yet to be announced.

Customers who pre-order the machines between February 13 and February 20 will also get a free pair of white Huawei Freebuds3.
