Its a great phone but yes the China model needs to have root enabled to get google play store working. I did this about a month ago and have been happy since. Its a great phone

v., 02 Oct 2012im having the same issue ...my ascend d1 comes from china, ... morejust download apps from play store or find them using google, no big deal. Google apps suck anyway, save from gmail, I can't imagine why would you want one.

I've just bought this phone, and it is amazing, the battery life, the system. Best of all the price and that the buttons are already for ice-cream sandwich. Only problem are the accesories and cases
