I bought this device since it came out in my country probably 3 months ago. It's great and still gets the job done. The camera, performance and the battery are still very good. But I'm wondering when the new update is coming out in central Europe (Austria). I can't wait for the face unlock feature and AR lens.

Someone is also selling a month old samsung a7 2017 at almost same price as the mate 10 lite. how's the a7 compared to the 2 considering the 1gb lower RAM and quite outdated android version?

If you want good portrait shots on camera and software updates till the android p go for A1. And also you have to compromise your software experiences. Because it runs vanilla android.
Mate 10 lite's pro against A1 is selfie camera. If you want stunning selfies definitely mate 10 lite is the pick. And also mate 10 lite has a heavier ui but it's so useful. Knuckle gestures, emui 8.0 special floating dock, split screen mode that you can change the size, there are lot's of it. And specially the 18:9 screen is so addictive that even now it's so weird to use a 16:9 screen when you are addicted to 2:1.if you mentioned Xiaomi redmi note 5 pro then it's the best buy. Kirin 659 can't compete with AI capable snapdragon 636.
