The Mate 9s camera is not even considered a very good camera.
Currently, the smartphones with the best cameras are iPhone 8/8 Plus, Google Pixel and HTC U11. I am pretty sure the iPhone X, Pixel 2/2 XL and Note 8 will soon enter the list, as well.
We can only hope the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will have much better cameras.

As far as i know. A11 bionic is maybe better than 835 snapdragon or Exynos Octa 8895 but thats it.

The best Camera available on the market up today is Mate 9 but hopefully this one better.
also S8/Note8 is next stage but after mate 9
Android will need now 6GB to perform fast for gamers/multi application, but I think the Mate 10 pro processor not better than galaxy S8/Plus/Note8

If they put some decent audio circuitry inside,which Huawei never had,I think this could be phone of the year 2017.
Maybe they could take that QuadDAC idea from LG or those excellent DAC/DSP chips (AKM) from ZTE Axon 7 and some quality amplifier..
That would justify that $1k price..sort of..
