The periscope has a starting focal length of 90mm.
The main cam's focal length has nothing to do with the periscope's zoom.
Lol.

90mm x 3.5 is simply 315mm. Yes you do some rounding, common sense.
Please read the SPECS and come back.

You're dividing it. Which is the opposite of multiplication 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
Google optical zoom, please. It's not complicated. You just have to multiply it.

Since actual focal length is much shorter, there's even less excuse for not using a longer focal length and hence more zoom

By the way, these ones on gsmarena are 35mm equivalent focal length not actual. The formula is:

Equivalent focal length=actual focal length/crop factor
Crop factor= diagonal of full frame sensor (43.3mm)/diagonal of your phone's sensor in mm

You'll find actual focal length in EXIF data and sensod diagonal on Wikipedia or manufacturer website

Bionic Chip, 30 Sep 20220.5 more? That's huge step above 3x if we start at 90m... moreExcept that your working out is wrong. Again, that's not how to find zoom or focal length. Correct way is:
104/25=4.33 (rounded down to 4) times optical zoom on pixel 6 pro.
So pixel has 104mm lens in periscope, so why mate 50 pro only has 90mm when periscope allows for much more?

Bionic Chip, 30 Sep 2022It doesn't matter if it can zoom 3.5x or not. What mat... moreSorry you're doing it wrong. That's not the way to multiply for zoom. The correct way is:

Zoom=max focal length (telephoto)/focal length of base lens (main camera)

So mate 50 pro's main camera has focal length of 24mm and telephoto is 90mm. So 90/24=3.75 (GSMarena should fix it, it's not 3.5x it's 3.75x).
And for iPhone 14 pro max it's 77/24=3.21 (i think they just round it down to nearest 0.0 or 0.5)
For s22 ultra, 70/23=3.04 and 230/23=10 times optical zoom.

So, you don't multiply the zoom to telephoto focal length as you did there, rather you multiply the zoom to main lens's focal length to approximate telephoto lens's zoom (i say approximate because advertised zoom is slightly inaccurate as shown above).

Yes, maybe you're right that 90mm lens may not fit without increasing phone's thickness so they need to fold it into periscope setup. But, once they did go periscope, question is why be limited to 3.5 or 3.75x and not go for lets say 5x? There's plenty of room so why be limited to 90mm?

Anonymous, 30 Sep 2022But this is periscope iphone isn't. Why need periscope... more0.5 more? That's huge step above 3x if we start at 90mm focal length.

                90mm x 0.5 = 45mm
Add that to 3x, and that is:
                (90mm x 3)+45mm
                270mm+45mm
                =315mm

Take a 600mm lens with 1x zoom (no zoom at all). Still beats a the 104mm telephoto on a Pixel 6 Pro with 4x zoom.

Anonymous, 30 Sep 2022I'm not denying it can zoom more than iphone because 3... moreIt doesn't matter if it can zoom 3.5x or not. What matters is the FOCAL LENGTH.
                  Do the math.
                  Huawei Mate 50 Pro: 90mm X 3.5= 315mm

We are getting 315mm and that qualifies as a telephoto lens.

Even a phone with 2x zoom with base focal length of 200mm, you still get 400mm at max zoom. Even greater than the Pixel 6 Pro with 4x.

Just google: "what does 3x optical zoom means" and do the multiplication yourself.

It has to be a periscope setup otherwise it won't fit. The sensor size, aperture, focal length, and thickness of the phone are all considered in designing these kind of camera systems.

Anonymous, 29 Sep 2022Why is there a periscope camera just to achieve 3.5x optica... more3.5x optical zoom seems like a small number but if you look at the base focal length of 90mm, multiply it by 3.5, and you get 315mm 😉

Mate 50 Pro's telephoto lens is greater than that of iPhone 14 Pro Max since it can only achieve a maximum focal length of 77mm x 3 = 231mm.

Haha! Mate 50 Pro's focal length is the equivalent of 210mm (315mm FF equivalent) zoom lens that you typically find on an APS-C camera body (e.g. SEL55210). I own this type of lens and I take moon photos with it.

Mate 20 pro is the best phone Ive ever used. It did everything and more.
Huawei invented reverse wireless charging on the mate phones and fast wireless charging as well. Its a shame people were jealous of huaweis success and they banned google.
Huawei would be number one right now.
