Huawei Mate S review: Precision styled

Display

As already mentioned, the Mate S is equipped with a 5.5 inch AMOLED display, which is a rarity in the Huawei product portfolio. True, we’ve seen AMOLED-equipped Huawei phones before, like the Ascend P1, but recently, the only other device to make use of the technology is the Huawei-made Nexus 6P.

This gives the Mate S a potential advantage over siblings like the Mate7, Honor 7 or the P8, which all rely on LCD technology. The displays on the aforementioned handsets are excellent in their own right and besides the improved power consumption when showing black screens and the generally spectacularly deep blacks, AMOLED technology doesn’t have as much advantage over LCDs for the end user. We admit we do have a knack for it and its amazing contrast though.

It seems Huawei was a bit overzealous to showcase all that punchiness and perhaps has went slightly overboard with the default color saturation, notably so with the red hue (DeltaE of 13.1). The rest of the colors are actually not that bad, but the average DeltaE for the primaries along with white and black is 8.1, which is well above the desirable limit of 4.

There is a slider in the Settings menu that allows you to give the screen tuning to a warmer or cooler tones. Moving the slider slightly to the warmer side changed mostly the whites, which brought the AverageDeltaE down to 6.8 but did little for the saturation of the other colors.

The maximum brightness of the Mate S screen is quite good for an AMOLED display (372nits), though we gotta admit we’ve seen better on Samsung’s devices. The Samsung Galaxy Note5 for instance, could manually be pushed up to 439nits and even more so in Auto mode where it reached a peak brightness of 620nits for a limited amount of time and only in bright light conditions.

Outside of Samsung’s devices, this sort of brightness level is actually slightly above average – we think that the Meizu Pro 5 (320nits) and the Oppo R7 Plus (351nits) would agree on that one. So outside of the overeagerly tuned color output, we’d reckon the Mate S carries one top notch screen.

Despite the less-than-impressive maximum brightness, however, AMOLED technology provides excellent sunlight legibility to the Mate S. A score of 3.073 is definitely above average in our current database.

Huawei Mate S battery life

The Mate S is equipped with a 2700 mAh battery, sealed in behind the back panel. Its capacity is quite modest, especially when we consider that the Honor 7 has 3100 mAh at its disposal and the Mate7 has a whopping 4100 mAh.

This is slightly disconcerting, but the Mate S's battery life hasn't taken too much of a dent. Still, if you are coming from another Huawei device, like one of the aforementioned two, you might notice a slight reduction as the Mate S scored a slightly lower endurance rating with a total of 60 hours.

Overall, however, the reduced battery life isn't nearly as bad as the mAh shortage would suggest. The phone's modem seems to leave a sizeable dent, reflected both in the poor call and standby times, but we've definitely seen a lot worse and 60 hours put the Mate S around the middle of our battery endurance database.

Our proprietary rating denotes the number of hours the phone will be operational if you are to make an hour of 3G talks, web browsing and video playback per day. Such usage pattern is of course entirely artificial, but we've established it so our battery results are comparable across devices.

The proprietary score also includes a standby battery draw test, which is not featured in our battery test scorecard but is calculated in the total endurance rating. Our battery testing procedure is described in detail in case you want to learn more about it.

Connectivity

As previously mentioned, the Huawei Mate S comes in both a single SIM and dual SIM variant. The latter offers dual standby, but the second SIM slot shares a cradle with the microSD card, so having two active cellular connections has its tradeoff.

The Huawei Mate S comes with quad-band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, multi-band 3G (model and market dependent). LTE Cat.6 is supported for downlink speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Local connectivity is duly covered with dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ with hotspot support. Bluetooth v4.0 is on board as well, and so is GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS. NFC is enabled too.
