iPhone 16 series to support much faster cable charging

Michail, 12 September 2024

Apple tends to omit detailed specifications for its iPhones and instead uses arbitrary terms for the most part. That includes wired charging speeds where the new iPhone 16 series, like their predecessors, are quoted to offer a 50% charge in 30 minutes when using Apple’s official 20W USB-C power adapter.

That’s all that Apple is saying on its official specs page, but a series of certifications from China confirms that Apple has dramatically upped the charging speed potential on the iPhone 16 series – peaking at 45W.

As per the China Quality Certification Centre (CQC), iPhone 16 (A3288), iPhone 16 Plus (A3291), iPhone 16 Pro (A3294), and iPhone 16 Pro Max (A3297) all support charging at 5-15 volts and 3 amps. This means up to 45W peak charging speeds which would be a notable improvement over the outgoing iPhone 15 series devices which topped out at 27-29W.

Apple officially quotes the same 50% in 30 minutes charging speeds for its new iPhone 16s but the key is that those figures reached with the official Apple 20W USB-C power adapter. This means the new iPhones should be able to take advantage of higher-powered chargers using the power delivery (PD) standard. It remains to be seen if this will deliver a meaningful improvement in 0-100% charging times.
