Leica launches Leitz Phone 3 with 1-inch Type sensor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC

Leica is of course most well-known for its cameras (and recently, collaborations with smartphone makers like Huawei and Xiaomi), but did you know it also makes mechanical watches and that there are Leica branded smartphones? Not just co-branded ones, but solely Leica branded devices.

The Leica Leitz Phone 1 was revealed in 2021, and the Leitz Phone 2 launched in 2022, both only in the Japanese market. By the way, in case you're wondering, Leica's founder's name was Ernst Leitz, hence the name of the phone range, but also the Leica name itself is composed of "Lei" from Leitz and "ca" for "Camera". Anyway, we digress. Today the Leitz Phone 3 got official, once again only for Japan.

The phone comes with a very Leica camera-like look, as it should considering the brand that's attached to it. In terms of the cameras themselves, the main one is a 47.2 MP 1-inch Type, just like in the Leitz Phone 2. This comes with a 19mm equivalent f/1.9 lens. On the front there's a 12.6 MP selfie snapper with f/2.3 aperture and 78-degree field-of-view.

The phone is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which, combined with the fact that there was no Leitz Phone last year, makes us think - was this initially supposed to launch in 2023? Anyway, there's also a 6.6-inch 240 Hz IGZO OLED display with 1260x2730 resolution and 2,000-nit maximum brightness.

The Leitz Phone 3 has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of expandable storage, and a 5,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 14. It's IP65 and IP68 rated for dust and water resistance, and like the previous models it's made by Sharp, which explains the Japan-only availability.

It ships with a Golden Hour widget, which alerts you an hour before sunset and after sunrise so you can quickly go out and take some "spectacular" pictures. There's also another widget that continuously rotates images from the Leica international gallery, showing you pictures taken with Leica cameras by actual photographers.

Leica Perspective Control debuts on the Leitz Phone 3, a software feature that corrects the perspective of vertical lines such as those seen when you shoot buildings. This was so far limited to Leica cameras. There are also new Leitz Looks and Leica Tones. The Leitz Phone 3 will become available in Japan on April 19, and it ships with a 'lens cap' and matching case.

I totally forgot these phones existed. Why are they not on the database? This company doesn't even have a tiny foothold on the market, and they are the only premium phones with 240Hz or expandable storage (other than Xperia, which might die any ...

Please make that cap with a magnet and a soft ring to prevent scratches, so that it can be safely and logically attached to the phone to prevent it from being misplaced. Love to see this in the US
