Rooting this phone is relatively easy. First, you have to have a v10d or older ROM. If you have ROM later that 10d - things MIGHT work, but not guaranteed. If they do not - look for KDZ flash tool and v10d or older ROM. Then you can root it using Framaroot (most versions should do, but if not - look for 1.4.1 or 1.6), Kingo root or VRoot. If you intend to use stock firmware, try OTA update immediately after rooting, in most cases it works. If you want to use custom ROMs, there's a manual on XDA or 4pda for installing custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, must-have tool for "playing" with ROMs. Good luck.

DO NOT upgrade to KitKat. Stop thinking what would be like your phone if it has KitKat. Phone gets slower, really slower and hard reset doesn't help. JellyBean is the best android version for this phone. :)
