I've had the 640 XL for almost two years. I upgraded it from W8.1 to W10 as soon as it was available. The installation was very troublesome because of limited storage, but I eventually got it done, and it was worth it. Some apps disappeared but, for the most part, they were replaced with better apps. Everything about w10 was far better than w8.1 and many things that hadn't worked before now worked, or worked better. My biggest problems are memory and storage. 1GB of memory often requires me to close things that I'd rather keep open, but the limit of 8GB of storage is a nightmare. Often, I can't complete a Windows Update because of the limited storage even though I moved everything to my 128GB micro-SD storage card, everything that could be moved, that is. Unfortunately, a lot of MS or Lumia apps cannot be moved to the SD card, leaving me with considerably less than 1GB of storage, which is not enough for installing many Windows Updates. This problem has gotten me so frustrated that I have strongly considered moving to the 950 XL (money) or even to the Alcatel 4s (not a Lumia and some negative feedback). It's hard to justify spending big $$$ for a phone, even a great phone, when MS has decided to drop out of both the mobile hardware and the mobile OS business.

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2017how do I update to windows 10?You don't. W10M is much much worse than WP81 on the 640XL. Plus: you loose almost any important app. The whole Here Maps suite is gone on W10M. MS totally killed Windows Phone by introducing W10M and halting WP81 development.Keep WP81 and be happy. You got a working phone.

If you need smartphone for normal everyday use then it's an excellent phone, way better than andoids in this price range. If you want a playtoy, then it's not for you.

I have been using lumia 640xl for nearly 8 months. My first smartphone Lumia 620 then to few Andriods then back to this model. My simple conclusion over this phone up to date is marvelous and decent performance from the initial terrible experience of unknown problems.
I have to emphasize one very important thing that this phone only sold after conversion in my country for USD80-100. Performance good although not the fast one but acceptably smooth. Satisfied Camera esp daylight but little let-down if insufficient light source. Battery can last me a day of working since I used to a lot emails. In-house Apps all great but 3rd party Apps mostly unnecessary junk pieces. However luckily In-house Apps sufficient for all the basic tasks, from messaging, keyboard, outlook, Edge, Office to map. Overall, the user experience that I can say was in the range of Andriod phones USD 150-200.
One very annoying thing about Android platform to me is All APPS can gain access too much information from us !!!! Example: Even a torchlight app need contact and location information, read your phone and message???? Why??
Initially I faced many problems with this phone even I was in windows 10. Felt terrible. Microsoft Edge not functioning well, small words on every start-up. Copy and Paste problems from Edge to emails or vice versa. Facebook always crashed the every opening so I have to open 2nd time to be able to use Facebook. Unable to update to the latest version.
I went to reset the phone. Be informed it won't erase the Windows 10 back to 8 again as the time I bought. You don't need to update again. Once it ready , installed back all Apps. The phone now works marvelously without the problem mentioned above. I got the latest July arm-based version.
Sadly to hear Microsoft has discontinued the line of LUMIA. In fact I love Windows mobile 10 so much.
