Moto G6, Play, and Plus unveiled with 18:9 screens, clean Oreo

Motorola has just unveiled a trio of mid-rangers – meet the Moto G6 family. Each of the three models has its own strengths, but they share many similarities too.

All three will launch with a clean Android 8.0 Oreo, they have 18:9 screens with fingerprint readers below them and while their cameras are different. All three have LED flashes for their selfie cams and get free high-quality storage on Google Photos (for both photos and videos).

The Moto G6 trio will be available from the first week of May, except in Brazil (where it launches immediately) and Mexico (where it will be available next week). The G6 and G6 Play will go on to launch in Europe, the Americas and the Asia Pacific. The G6 Plus will not be available in North America but will cover only the other regions.

Moto G6 Plus

Of the three new phones, the Plus model gets the best toys. It has a bigger screen than the other two, a 5.9” IPS panel with 1080p+ resolution and a tall 18:9 aspect ratio. And it gets the more powerful chipset, a Snapdragon 630, paired with 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM.

The Moto G6 Plus also gets the best camera – a 12 MP + 5 MP dual camera with large 1.4µm pixels. The camera also sports Dual Pixel autofocus and is capable of 4K video capture. Around the front there’s an 8 MP selfie camera (1080p video) with face filters.

This model is also both slimmer than the G6 (8.0mm vs. 8.2mm) and has a larger battery (3,200 mAh vs. 3,000 mAh). A 15W TurboPower charger is included in the retail box along with a USB-C cable.

The Plus will be available in versions with up to 128 GB of storage, all of which have a microSD card for more.

The Moto G6 Plus will cost €300.

Moto G6

Like the other two, the Moto G6 has P2i water-repellent coating, which will guard the electronics from accidental spills. This model has a 5.7” screen – still an IPS with 1080p+ resolution – and is powered by a Snapdragon 450 chipset with 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB or 64 GB storage (+ a microSD slot).

The dual 12 MP + 5 MP camera features an f/1.8 lens. It lacks the Dual Pixel AF and 4K video modes of the Plus model, instead, it tops out at 1080p @ 60 fps. The 8 MP selfie camera is the same.

The Moto G6 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery and a 15W TurboCharger is included. Like the other two it features a front-facing loudspeaker, but this is the only one to get Dolby Audio.

Both the G6 and G6 Plus use Gorilla Glass 3 for the front and back (and on the back the glass is curved to fit the shape of the phone).

The Moto G6 will cost €250.

Moto G6 Play

The Moto G6 Play is all about the battery – all 4,000 mAh of it. Motorola says it can last up to 36 hours on a single charge and you get the same 15W TurboPower charger as the pricier models.

The Snapdragon 430 chipset isn’t particularly powerful, but not much is expected of it as the 5.7” IPS LCD has 720p+ resolution. There’s a single variant with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB storage (expandable via microSD).

The rear camera stands alone, a 13 MP sensor that can shoot 1080p video @ 30 fps. The selfie camera on the front is the same 8 MP module.

Note that this model has the P2i water-repellent coating only in the US.

The Moto G6 Play will cost €200.
