To get free ringtones, if you have a tracfone model, go to http://www.tracfone.com/buy_ringtones.jsp?task=buy_ringtones
From there, enter your esn or imei and choose what you want.. To get sounds, go to new message, and insert recording, and record 20 seconds of anything, and to get it as a ringtone, I believe it would work if you would message the sound to someone, and have them send the same message back to you, and then you can upload it onto your phone and use it as a ringotne. I believe that's the only way to get real sounds. Hope I could help!

I don't have this phone, but I'm pretty much a cell phone expert. For anyone who needs advice...Well, for one, the phone doesn't have real ringtones, only polyphonic; which isn't so bad because there are downloadable ones. It has internet access, and for you people who want to connect through usb, I don't know where to find cables, but they connect through the headset jack I believe. Backlights are supposed to go off, its like, going on standby, you could say. There's nothing wrong with the phone if this happens. And of course it doesn't come with bluetooth or infrared, but thats what prepaid is all about; no high-tech features, basically for the simple people who only want the basics. But whoever buys this phone should consider themselves lucky because most prepaid don't come with any special features, and in this phone, you get almost everything you could ask for. I don't mean to brag, but I've been a tracfone customer for about 5 years, anything else anyone wants to know, feel free to email me. Hope I've been helpful.!

My intention is not to open old wounds, but its because I did not get a satisfactory answer to my previous query
I think the C261 is quite a good phone; though I have some reservations.
I had a few problems with the phone. When I contacted Customer Care I was asked to provide certain information about the phone, which I did. Unfornately at the end of it all I was asked to go back to the dealer, who is in South Africa and I am in Zambia. The cost of getting to South Africa is not worth the both.
The main the problems I had with the phone were the low power retaintion. You need to re-charge the battery every other day; the other is the screen; when the phone lights are off you cannot read what's on the screen
I was also provide with the USB which I cannot use to download picture because, I told, the phone has no provision for that. I wonder why I was given.
I gave up the phone

Hi everyone,
just bought this phone, seems to do a great job for the price. Only problem is, I can't get the handset manager software to work. The phone came with a USB cable (which plugs into the headphones serial jack at the device end) and a software suite with the necessary drivers.
After installing and plugging everything in, I started the app. The phone apparantly receives some signal as it lights up with a "Connecting..." message, but then inevitably reports "Failure!"
I've turned off all the firewalls, A/V protection etc. on my computer, but still no dice.
It wold be really cool if i could get download/upload pictures and music.
Anyone having the same problems/ got any ideas?

Khalifa- when it displays Emergency, I think that means: 1. registration is not complete yet, or possibly 2. it detects a signal, but not from one of its carrier affiliates. Mine displayed "Emergency Only" for a short time during registration, & I think (1) was the reason.
Battery charge: when new, on *any* cell phone, it's important to fully charge & discharge the battery several times, even with lithium ion batteries. When it says fully charged after only an hour or two, don't believe it- charge for at least 7 to 8 hours(longer won't hurt & might help) on the AC charger the first 10 times or so. Also let it run down until the phone turns itself off whenever possible, at least at the first.
Short version: charge it all the way up(overnight), then run it all the way down(phone turns itself off). Repeat several times. This is critical to getting full battery performance for both talk time & standby.
USB cables- does anyone know of someone successfully using a USB cable, in the USA, with a TracFone C261? Even better, are *you* successfully using a USB cable in the USA on a TracFone C261?
Camera- it has quite a few settings & special effects for a cheap VGA phone-camera. Yahoo offers free image upload to your Yahoo Photos account in the USA from certain carriers, might be worth setting up a Yahoo email account. Haven't tried it yet myself, but plan to soon.

If you just want a phone with a clear strong voice and a decent camera feature for in-phone images ... this is a good phone. Unfortunetly here in Mexico they are ripping off people by selling it for $110USD when its value is more like $60 ... almost double the price. Mexico always sells older technology at premium prices ... the WTO need to rangle their butts a bit I think!

It arrived today via FedEx. Charged it a little over 2 hrs, it read "fully charged". Jumped through all the hoops & got it registered online- the TracFone deal expires Oct. 23, may be too late to get one in time now. But after registration, it now has 620 minutes air time, & expires Dec. 15 2007!
Took a few hours to get the new cell number via a call from TracFone, but it finally came through. Made a couple of test calls to it- very weak signal readings here at home(varies from 0 to 3 bars, seems to come & go), but it rang! It's *Alive*! ;)
Leaving it on the charger overnight, gotta pick up a car charger for it tomorrow at WalMart- they're closing out some Motorola car kits for the C-155 phone. I checked, Moto sells the same car charger for both the C155 & C261, so for $6 I'll get a car charger & earbud headset that fit the C261- plus a leather case that probably will be way too big for it.
Fatima, thanks for that link. I'm tempted to order that cable kit & see if it will work on a USA market C261. Sure would be nice to upload pictures into my computer without using up all that airtime.
Thanks again to MotoMan, Fatima, & all the other helpful people who have posted here. I'll try to return the favor, & post things here as I learn them. Plan for tomorrow- how to send a picture, as a MMS, to my email acct. I think Yahoo has a procedure, just gotta jump through some more hoops! 8D
