Motorola Edge 40 in for review

Motorola unveiled the Edge 40 Pro exactly a month ago, and today the company followed up with the vanilla model. The Motorola Edge 40 comes in Eclipse Black, Nebula Green, and Lunar Blue colors, and it's the black model we've received at the office for review. But before we put the Motorola Edge 40 through its paces, let's take a quick look at what the smartphone offers.

Unlike the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, which comes in a black-colored box, the Edge 40's retail unit comes in a recycled box similar to last year's Edge 30 Ultra. It includes a clear protective case, a SIM ejector tool, a USB-C cable, a 68W power adapter, and the usual documentation.

The Motorola Edge 40 is built around a 6.55" FullHD+ OLED panel with a 144Hz screen refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling rate, and 1,200 nits peak brightness. It supports HDR10+ and has a fingerprint reader underneath for biometric authentication and a centered punch hole for the 32MP selfie camera.

Around the back, we get a squircle-shaped camera island housing two LED flash modules and two cameras - 50MP primary (with OIS) and 13MP ultrawide. The latter has autofocus so that you can take macro shots with it.

Like the Nebula Green model, the Eclipse Black model we received also weighs 171g and sports a rear panel with a vegan leather finish, but the Lunar Blue version's back cover uses acrylic plastic and weighs 167g. All three variants have IP68 dust and water resistance, though.

Powering the Motorola Edge 40 is the Dimensity 8020 SoC, paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The smartphone runs Android 13 out of the box, but we are still waiting to hear about the number of Android version upgrades it will get.

The Edge 40 also comes with Dolby Atmos and stereo speakers, and keeping the entire package up and running is a 4,400 mAh battery charged through a USB-C port at up to 68W. The smartphone also supports 15W wireless charging.

The leather-like finish is rubbery to the touch and already has a worn look to it. It's not for everyone - we find it a bit rough out of the box.
