The buttons are embedded in the removable back cover. To access the SIM card slot, that cover must be taken off and it is very easy to break it in the process, especially around those buttons, where it's very thin. The worst comes now: Motorola does not sell replacement back covers. The only option they offer is to replace the entire phone, against a "physical damage" fee. In short, if that removable back cover happens to break, this (otherwise pretty good) phone is doomed. I find that unacceptable.

Picked one up for $15 brand new in open box. I'm just gonna play with it and see what it can do without ever putting a sim card in it. Every app on the thing, every single feature, is designed to collect personal information of some kind. It's basically an advertising-delivery platform that simultaneously hoovers up every possible scrap of information about you, "the user." "The used" would be closer to the truth.

I was looking for a basic Android phone and decided to try this one.
For its price (CDN $150), my expectations were not high but this phone has indeed surprised me.
Pros
+ Stock Android or at least very few vendor app. Less bloat = more speedy.
+ Decent battery. I charge every 2 days with minimal to average usage.
+ Removable battery and back cover
+ microSD card slot
+ Good camera snap speed
+ Clear call quality using speaker and mic
+ I really like the fingerprint reader. No need to enter patterns (but you still can).
+ Android Oreo
+ CDN $150
+ Did I mention the speedy performance?
Cons
- No NFC (I don't use it so it's not really a problem for me).
- The textured back isn't "grippy" enough (just buy a case, problem solved)
- No blinking notification (it has the hardware so this depends entirely on the software which they can add anytime through an update). However, it's got "Moto display" which nicely fades in and out when you get notifications. You can also download apps that can enable the notification light if you really want it.
That's everything I could think of at the moment. Hopefully, this device will last for a long time.
So far, I am pleased with this phone. It does everything I need. With its price/performance ratio, you can't beat it. My previous phone was more expensive than this one but not faster.

I have had this smartphone for almost two weeks now. Purchased it from O2 on PAYG in the UK for £80. So far I am impressed. Well worth the money. Would recommend. For calls, texts, some web browsing and basic photos it is more than capable. It even says "Hello Moto" :-) Plus it also has a fingerprint reader. Still not sure about Android Go though.

Excellent phone. To those ripping on it for not being a premium phone realize that this phone obliterates its competition in its price range. The step up is double the cost but has superior hardware (and that carbon backplate).
Back to the E5 play. Good touch response. Easily get a full day from the battery. GFX performance is poor so this is not a good game phone. Best in class 1000%.

Bought this phone outright for $170 CAD. Decent and capable phone.
I don't game or use tons of apps so it more than meets and exceeds my needs.
2 GB ram and is fairly speedy. The battery life could be better, but using it as stated above I've been charging once every 36-48 hrs. If you're looking for a decent mid range phone I'd recommend this. If you're overly picky about cam quality buy a camera. If you don't spend hours upon hours on social media or gaming on your phone this is great bang for the buck.

I bought this yesterday.
As people said, Lonovo has destroyed the quality of Motorola phones.
It has HD display but it looks like half of that resolution.
it has 8mp camera but VGA camera is better than this.
Battery drains rapidly. 50% in one night.
Today I am going to replace/return/repair this at store.
Never buy this phone. Put some extra bucks and buy good one.

There's something funky about this phone. Finnish retailers are posting it with 1GB RAM while on here it says 2GB. I'd trust GSMArena over anything, but are there 2 versions being sold?

Need a present for the little sister of an ex but the removable back is a turn-off even at this price, so i wondered how bad is it? Any glitches, does it feel solid, will the cover fly off if the phone is dropped, or other typical drawbacks of removable backs?

I bought the Motorola Moto E5 Play a week ago after a long search for a low cost phone that would do all the basics along with a removable battery and the capability to do GPS navigation. So in my search I was looking for a mobile with a compass/magnetic sensor which aids navigation so was a must have for me. I checked a few comparison sights and they all agreed the E5 Play had all the specifications I was looking for. Once I received the phone in the UK I was really disappointed compass apps would not work. Only then I checked with www.motorola.co.uk to find COMPASS sensor NOT INCLUDED! So I’m really disappointed with the bum steer from these comparison sites. Not sure what to do with the mobile now; I’m find the mobile is pretty good just missing that compass sensor I was looking for.
