Of what I can dig up on the net, the E8 has the same ARM 11 CPU running at 500Mhz(faster than my first computer :) and my second as well) that the U9 and V8 have. The fact that it has to deal with more memory, more features(touch keys, haptics, omega wheel) and it has been apparently optimized for music could explain for the reported sluggishness of the handset.
Tsepz, sorry to hear that, unfortunately many people should grow up (and those who can't because they are 10-12-15 years old should learn to not say stupid things).
On the matter of good or bad handsets: nowdays I find it harder and harder to find a bad handset. More I find handsets that are suited or unsuited to a type of user. I can give a simple example:
My parents needed mobile phones and they are somewhat old-school(not so up to date with technology) so I got them entry level Nokias...I'm still amazed at how long those phones can go without needing recharging, and how simple they are to use.
Sister needed a cool phone and she found what was a cool technological powerhouse back then: SE W810i. It amazes me how good that tiny 2MP camera is (That phone camera got me into serious photography :P).
I for one am more geeky in nature, and I searched for a nice featured phone that I could play with it, so I choose the Motorola V360 (bought it shortly after it's launch and it is still serving me rather good) and moded it to death and back (phone's death :P literally).
If I were to give sister or mum&dad my phone, they would throw it away saying it's rubbish. I would get bored instantly with mum&dad's phone, and sister's even if it is more featured than mine, would end up boring me sooner or later.
Now days, it is sad to see that Motorola is getting hit by bad marketing and late products. Imagine if the E8 and 5310 (which i consider a success story for the XM line of Nokia) would have hit the market at the same time and the Moto handset would have been marketed correctly.
It is sad to see Moto's decline (as it was with another pioneer of mobile phone industry, Siemens), when they manage to put out interesting phones like the E8. If there is one thing you can't argue about is that the current trend of the phone business is "follow the heard: give more megapixels, more battery sapping features that they might need or they might not".
PS: Sorry of the off-topic, I hope that by the end of this month I'll have my E8 and I can give it a review. 'Till then, be nice, and remember: it is not bad to copy a good thing as long as you do it right and bring your own improvements, but it is better to be imaginative and innovate(no Samsung or LG connection here :P)!

The E8 uses a XScale PXA270 CPU by Marvel, running at 312MHz not 500, thats why E8 is slower than both a V8 and N81.

Uhmm no the N81 hardly ever restarts, mine hasnt in quite a while but since its a SMART phone its normal for it to freeze and restart once in a while, most SMART phones, PDAs and PPCs do it. Ever used a MOTO Z8 OR Z10? They tend to restart often.

motorola e8 rules! surely rather choose e8 than other cellphones..oh' sorry, but i will never respect nokia cellphones the way i gave respect to the motorola cellphones!!!!buy nokia cellphones at just a tiangge... and disppose it right away no months yet... why??haha... nokia cellphones are not that deserving to be a lovable cellphones and respectable cellphones like motorola cellphones...if i gt a motorola cellphone i buy direct the brandnew cos motorola are not cheap and they are the deserving lovable and respectable cellphones can't you guys see??this funny thing:nokia got clone made in china cellphones so they are really too cheap while motorola vellphones are all directly original no motorola clone cellphones!hahaha...so,,mean e8lovers

For your question regarding texting while listening to music, I've tried doing it and tried it again immediately after reading your comment just to be sure - no lagging or slow down in my E8's operation. Since I owned the phone until now, I've not encountered any "hangs" too. Further to this topic of lagging, E8 can have a slight lag sometimes (not all the time), I called and talked to a Motorola's tech guy to ask why my previous V8 is faster & smoother than E8 since both are using 500Mhz processor & Linux OS too. He said it is due to the extra processing power required for E8's additional features like morphing keypad, haptics design, FastScroll Wheel function and so on resulting in a slight lag sometimes. Since both V8 & E8 are using 500Mhz processor, V8 will perform faster & smoother as there are no additional loads for its processor to work on unlike E8 with its unique CES 2008 winning features. I felt the difference because I changed from V8 to E8 back to back but after 2 months now, I'm OK with it, not that it'll "lag" for an hour, just in milliseconds and it's only sometimes so I can live with that.
Once again I would like to thank you maniac regarding your great long comment here, I can see you are a genuine CONTRIBUTOR in helping those in need of information on E8 - unlike some CONTRADICTORs. (LOL)

But picking on other phones at will is just too brutish and insulting. If someone has a better high-end phone and he bashes the N81 forums, won't you feel hurt by that guy's comments, huh? Put yourself in one's shoes, you will know how degrading it is to have his favorite product badmouthed by another person.
Apparently, someone has deleted my latest comment. It was not aimed at degrading anyone whatsoever; I'm just trying to prove that not even a fraction of the people who use high-end phones actually maximize the features of such devices. It would be too impractical and useless to buy a feature-rich phone if you will only use it to talk and text, not to mention show it off to your buddies. Not everyone is a techno whiz like you, Tsepz.

Tzsep(C3P0 for that matter), I have a question for you: "Why you a hater?". We understand you love the N81 (it's a nice feature phone) but why do you choose to pick on the E8 and it's users? Nobody said that N81 is a bad phone (I'm right now looking for a new phone myself and i'm being tempted by the E8 and N81...i'll get to that later on). I think you're very childish and immature(if I were a head-shrink, i'd say even that you are unhappy with the N81 and try to make yourself feel better by bashing others).
To be honest, the N81 is a better featured phone than the E8(not to mention that the price diference isn't that great, around here, the N81 is around 70$ more expensive than the E8) but they are ment to appeal to different people.I for one don't need half of the features of the N81(games/browsing/camera etc) BUT I need a good music player, decent build quality and great talk quality!
I for one am looking for a music saavy phone, with good audio quality and overall good package. I've ended up testing the 5310, E8 and N81, and of what I can say both Nokia's are faster in operation than the E8 and simpler to use than it(after 30 min of using, the E8 control is quirky, but i think i could get used to it), but they are also rather boring phones. Switching from the 5310 to N81, you don't feel the almost 150$ leap in price tag. And don't even get me started on the N81 keys...they are, at least for me, horrendus in quality(cheapish plastic at best).
What I see that people don't understand is that the E8 is ment to hit on the 5310 and other XM phones. And if it would have arrived a bit sooner on the market i feel it would have blown the 5310 out of the watter. It surpasses it on every front:
1. Design
2. Build quality
3. Sound quality/Music quality
4. "Je ne says quoi" effect.
And the price tag difference is minimal (about 60$)
But these are only my conclusions after a small amount of time spent with the phones.
There is one big problem I have with buying the E8:
Can you write a message and listen to music at the same time? (I mean, i know you can, but it doesn't freez/hang/move very slowly?)

GSMArena did an audio test, i suggest searching, N81 did very well.

M@t2 is what will show up when using Opera Mini. And the reason why they compared e8 to XM phones is due to low/similar pricing.

The Nseries are not cheap, and hold their value very well.

Hi all Motorola E8 fans, looks like C3Po has changed name so don't need to waste time going another round of "debates" with the new "name". Look at the encoded Location (M@T2) so don't waste your time & effort as we have already "Been there, done that".
Looks like N81 was brought up again, I'm certainly happy for being an E8 user and hoping CNET could also conduct a comparison between these two - something I strongly believe will not materialize as I believe the judging panel are radical and more intelligent individuals to even think it's logical to do so. Let's celebrate all E8 users, the phone's been perceived to be at higher levels again. (LOL)

don't be foolish! we all know many of nokia phones are just copycat and are only innovations. nothings changed sometimes they just need to add details for them to look newer.. they launch many phones but they're just rubbish phones..

i also love and i really enjoy playing games on this phone.. i don't need N81 for perfect gaming cuz for me this phone has its all i need music.. camera.. games..
my classmates gets envy because of this phone.. in fact i don't need to gain popularity because of using expensive phone like your N81, i gain popularity because of UNIQUE features in this phone, feel special and proud cuz of the phone's only feature that no other has..
maybe your one of what we call IGNORANT because your not aware of the feature this phone has..
and i don't need N81 and their features if i have a phone like no other has..

Tsepz, you don't realize that not everyone, not even 20 percent of people who own high-end phones even use the features provided by their devices. Heck, 3G calling is rare even amongst 3G phone users. People use GPS less often than you think. And how many people know technical terms such as HSDPA, EV-DO, Carl Zeiss and accelerometer? Not a lot.
It's time you learn that most people are not like you, who wants every single feature om the planet in his phone.
