So if you want the other party to hear everything else except your own voice, go for the W910i.
If you buy a phone because it's a "phone", then get an E8.

100 Moto, 24 Sep 2008Em30 vs. E8...really depends if you really need the extra 2... moreJust an add-on to my comment with regards to FastScroll Wheel.
I seldom lock my E8's keypad using the side button and I found that the phone will light up either by pressing a button or if lightly touched by our thumb on the wheel area. It won't be easy to press a particular button since it's flat surface unless you keep your phone in a tight storing environment like tight jeans or pants, frequently bend at an angle (getting up, sitting down position) then you might activate the phone. So I usually keep my E8 unlocked, with 10 seconds display timeout setting and when I need to use it, I'll just brush my thumb lightly on the wheel and the phone's ready for my command. Touching the wheel with fabric materials, plastic or paper will not activate the phone at all.
I used to keep my phone in my pants' pocket when walking and will move it to my shirt pocket when I sit down - it's already a habit. This information is no big deal but I hope it'll benefit those who are new users and also for those who find it troublesome to lock & unlock their phones frequently.

E8 actually supports 8GB external memory card (through my own test), so with the 2GB internal memory, it offers 10GB of memory. How many songs can you store with 10GB? (who else offers 10GB of memory at the price of E8?)
Also agree with Stuart's comment about the scroll wheel, which I think is the next best thing next to touchscreen in terms of "fast scrolling" or selection.
I hope Moto will continue offering the "omega wheel" on other phones.

keenen, 23 Sep 2008i have always thought that the rokr e8 have the edge over t... moreI found the FastScroll Wheel useful if you've many songs or files. Since the songs are filed in alphabetical order, assuming you have 100 songs, the wheel can bring you to the alphabet you're looking for real fast. Try pressing the arrow down button to search and it'll be slower so imagine the amount of songs you can store when you have 2GB built in & 8GB memory card, it's a pain to search for songs. Getting used to the wheel initially is a little tough but thru time & constant use, you'll appreciate its feature. Initially I thought the wheel is a "show off" design by Motorola but now I know its usefulness.
So between E8 and EM30, the choice is individual's preference. I like black & the FastScroll Wheel (now) so E8's my choice.

i have always thought that the rokr e8 have the edge over the em30, the latter being branded as poorman's e8, but seems that all the e8 features are the same as em30, the only difference is the navi wheel... also the price, but it seems that it has only a difference of less then USD 50 in my place...
what can u guys suggest? which is better e8? em30?

The morphing keypad is more impressive especially at night when "now you see it, now you don't" during switching between modes.
Try lending your phone to a friend and see their face's reaction when they try to search for a keypad to dial, (make sure the keypad's locked so that the keys are not illuminated)then;
See their reaction again when they press the key buttons & the haptics kick in - it's fun.
Finally use the FastScroll Wheel to further "seal the deal" showing them they should have chosen this ROKR instead of their Jurassic Park model (LOL).

100 Moto, 22 Sep 2008I would recommend anyone interested in an E8 try to get a "... moreMan, you're qualify to talk about Motorola phones, 11 Motorola phones in a year alone is unbelievable, it'll probably take me 5 or 6 years to reach that. With that number of Motorola phones you've used, you're so accustomed to Synergy OS & Linux, the performance of different models so you can share so much with everyone here.
I agreed that testing the actual unit up on E8 is better before buying & same goes to other phones too. Initially the keypad did give little challenges to me but after a week or so, it's alright, in fact it'll interesting to see how I feel getting back to the conventional keypad next time. So it depends on whether the person buying the E8 is accepting it as plus point or minus.
I'm also interested to test out the ZN5, the specs are great.

No, this is a joke, definitely I'm not qualify, I'm into equipment project sales, always on the go meeting clients and sales, sales, sales... and then eat & sleep(LOL). So Strepsils, computer, LCD projector and not forgetting mobile phone are my good friends! Unlike you, you defintely have more experience than me in terms of phones. Still no scratch yet... (touch wood), ha, ha, ha.

Or else, those interested may also look at the Zn5, which has almost everything an E8 does, only with better cam, WiFi, etc...of course at a higher price tag.
Though I "played" around with a live Zn5 this weekend and found the keypad response is a bit more "normal" than E8, which I can live with.
So what happened to my E8? After about 4 months, I decided to trade it in....with some other "backup" phones like W181 (free gift from my new V9!) W375, V188 & V150 (yes!)...and added US$190...there I now have an A1600. Yes, I just got my 10th and 11th Moto phones this year, V9 (for a great deal at US$254) and an A1600.
Still look at Zn5, which I'm still waiting for my stupid network service provider to carry it, so I can get a good deal upon renewal of my contract.
So maybe I won't be qualified to say anything more about E8 here! -_-

E8, 21 Sep 2008Im planning to buy this phone...but do you guys know if the... moreThe memory card is not "hot-swappable", meaning it can't be removed without removing the battery. There are pros & cons to it. The disadvantage is removing battery to take out the card is troublesome but the good thing is protection, like our PC, removing a big storage device like hard disk or card requires the user to Safely Removing Device procedures to avoid problem occurring. So depending on how we view it individually, we'll need to turn off the phone before removing the memory card.
As for key pressing, basically the same kind of pressings like we normally do, the difference is each time you press a key, you'll get feedback from the phone that it received your command via small vibration (tactile or haptics feedback). Sometimes you wonder how the phone receive your pressing commands when the surface is flat, of course we all know in theory, must be the sensors right? For PDA phones like HTCs, Dopod & so on, they have a touch screen layer underneath so you can touch anywhere & it'll respond but for E8, the touch respond is not everywhere so that makes me wonder how they did it together with the haptics, so it's revolutionary for this model when it first came out and eventually grabbed the CES 2008 award, I guess. The Morphing keypad, haptics respond were what captured my attention when buying the E8 and battery is quite good too.

Zoro, 20 Sep 2008I got my e8 just yesterday and my keypad is allready broken... moreMy case, I didn't experience the keypad problem that you were saying. Even pressing 2 keys together should not give this problem. I've sometimes pressed 2 keys at the same time but no problem so far so since your unit is new, you should be able to claim warranty for it. If there's no crack on the top flat surface then they (your local authorised Motorola agent) cannot say that you've dropped it or hit on another surface causing the problem. Go claim warranty, I did on my previous Motorola phone and got the problem solved. The real problem I'm worrying for you is if your E8's purchased elsewhere and not from your local authorised Motorola agent. This kind of warranty claim problem happens to all other phone brands too, be it SE, Nokia, Samsung, etc, etc.... It cost slightly higher buying from originally imported phone from the authorised agent but it pays in condition like this.
