It is a crime that Motorola can't or won't make a phone this nice anymore. It is the best phone I have ever owned, excellent sound quality, easy to read display even in sunlight. I am on my 3rd & last one & I am dreading the day this one dies & I have to replace it.

Actually, MY understanding of the Patriot Act is that companies were required, as of about 2004, to ensure that 95% of all cell'phones have positioning electronics in'em. NOT 100%. I'm not sure that the P/A specifies that 'phone companies CANNOT activate such a legacy 'phone, given that they have the required 95%. I think that it's the usual marketing hype - buy a new 'phone, buy a new play. I am in fact looking for a late-model Motorola GSM Startac - I'm overseas - BUT I'M NOT SURE THAT current SIMMS are compatable with it. Anyone know? Thanks. MWH

Today 2/25/06 Verizon advised that by law they cannot program my back-up Startac 130 due to the lack of GPS per the phone. My 130 is DOA.
I have other "new" phones for the business but nothing I have ever used compares with the Star. I dislike all the bells and whistles on the new phones.
I have appreciated a phone that has worked well for almost 8 years.......Thank you Motorola but PLEASE bring the original Star 130 back into production and back to the USA for us to enjoy.

if this phone is bought, no one will activate it since it is against federal law to do so. this phone must have GPS tracking installed or it will never be activated by any business in the US.

Verizon office said they would NOT activate StarTAC phones, due to federal law, because they do not have GPS (global position) necessary for 911 calls. If you know a work around, please reply.

I just bought a startac for Alltel used. The startac was the best working phone I ever owned. I didn't know you could buy preowned like that from a website!? I still have all the accessories, including the hands free speakerphone/radio transmitter/charger. Oh well, the startac rides again. I hope they bring it back to the states like they did in Korea, minus the ridiculous price...

Does anyone know how to get a Motorola Startac 130 to work in a factory fitted Jaguar (2001)Kit. I believe some programming is required that is not in the manual.

The NEW StarTAC may be reality!
In the mid-90s, Motorola released the StarTac, a cell phone with a revolutionary clamshell design taking the world by surprise. Years later, it became a staple in Motorola's product portfolio as North Americans everywhere became flip phone fanatics.
But as times progressed, Motorola's clamshell market share slowly dwindled as it released less popular T720, and V-series phones; unable to sustain the dominance held by the StarTac.
Recently, Motorola attempted to appeal to lost fans by releasing a StarTac inspired device in the Korean market. But it took a decade to re-introduce the North American market to an upgraded design.
Measuring 46 x 87 x 20 mm and weighting just 87 grams, the new StarTac 2004, dubbed the V.I.P. 10th Anniversary Edition, will be an upgraded version of the original for the new millennium. Planned to run on the Verizon's new 3G cdma2000 1xEV-DO high-speed network, the StarTac 2004 will be able to stream and store multimedia at broadband speeds stored on its 4 MB of internal memory. Optimal talk and standby times are 190 minutes and 185 hours respectively.
For multimedia, the StarTac 2004 supports 64 chord polyphonic ringtones. And with at 128 x 160 px resolution, the 262K color TFT screen displays up to 9 lines of text. Five interchangeable covers are available for customization including red, gold, black, white, and blue.
Retailing at $1,600-$2,000 USD, the Special Anniversary Edition carries a hefty price tag. Currently, it's unknown if Motorola plans to make a reoccurring production model for the masses.

The StarTAC is the best phone and most likely the most engineered phone in history! Fantastic accessories and tough as an ox, the StarTAC is indeed a REAL PHONE. No silly games, no crappy silver finish paint that rubs off over a few months.... a phone that will last years and years if treated right.
Long live the StarTAC - and hope Motorola brings it back with say all the new technology, 3G, and screen under the ear piece.... rock on StarTAC!
