Here is the list of things I did to get my v180 to sync with my computer, which resulted in many a great mp3 tone and midi files that are awesome:

If you have tried before, make sure your phone is plugged in, open up the device manager in My Computer and remove either the Motorola v180, or in some cases "Unknown Device". Make sure this device is the phone.
        Unplug your V180.

Download the p2k (not p2k98, as it doesn't even work on windows 98) driver from http://bongowireless.com/file_download.php

unzip it to a folder, like "moto driver" on the desktop. You will have to create this folder (obviously). Plug in your phone. Xp should detect it, and start a search for drivers. When none can be found, direct it to the "moto driver" folder.

Keep in mind that the phone is considered a modem.

        Download MobilePhoneTools 3.11 from here: http://coma.fsb.hr/motorola/files/Motorola.Mob ile.PhoneTools.v3.11h.Final.Retail.rar
It is a 28MB file, and will take a long time on a dial up modem. I used a flash drive and used my school's network. If you do not have WinRar, you must get it. Winzip does not read it. The installer will be in the archive in the "Setup" folder. Once it has been installed, run it. It will complain about not having access to some keys, but they are not vital for operation. It will try to access the modem for the first time. I think all you have to do is un-plug then re-plug your v180 in. once MPT has detected the v180, it will show an image of the v180 on your screen. then open the multimedia studio and have fun!

note: any mp3 tones must be at 40kbps or more, or the v180 will render them corrupt.

I'm in IT and it took me about 20 hours to get this thing connected on my XP SP1 machine. Here is what worked for me in the end:
          1. Install MPT v1.23c and accept any reboots
          2. Install MPT v2.16 update and accept any reboots
          3. Start MPT and run the internet update and accept any reboots.
          4. Shut down MPT
          5. Connect phone through USB
          6. Ensure it shows in Device Manager as Motorola USB modem using driver v 2.0.0.4 dated 4/5/2004.
          7. Start MPT

Like I said, I tried everything and I think this is all I did to get it to work. It is on my machine on Com 4.

Marine22: I was having the same problem. What you probably have to do is, when you click the menu button on the picture of the phone (which DOESN'T resemble your phone, I assume). From the menu choose "setup" and then "add new phone" and then add the "usb modem". Then it'll give you a list of phones. The V180 is under "gsm". When you pick it the phone displayed should be a V180 and all the picture and music transferring should work.

I downloaded the MPT 3.11, and I followed your advice, and my phone connected. My problem is that when I go to the Multimedia studio, I can't get ANYTHING to transfer, pictures or ringtones, and can't find a place to transfer java games. I downloaded small little 30 sec MP3 clips to transfer, but everytime I press the transfer button it says "unnsupported format-no conversion possible", and when I try the pix it does nothing at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am a total noob to the cell phone downloading and interfacing so instead of asking a bunch a questions is there a good site to go to that has explainations for tools to download and how to use them. I am looking good general knowledge about how to start using all the tools, games, etc on my phone.
                Thanks

I just transferred my number from AT&T to Cingular and got this phone for free.

I currently have the T721 and it has problems with the screen cutting out and short battery life.

I don't know what all the bitching is about, it's a free phone. If you don't like it you have 30 days to send it back and get a different model.

I had to get a new phone when renewing my cell plan and this was the least expensive, decent looking phone I could find ($40 extra.) I had a non-flip Motorola 120t before.

I'm very impressed with this phone for the price. Voice is nearly land-line quality. The color screen is very nice, crisp and vibrant. The phone book has lots of room for phone numbers (although the SIM card chops at 24 characters which isn't nearly long enough.) The battery seems to hold a charge for more than a few days. Reception was awesome compared to my old phone, which was good in itself. My former dead zones are no longer dead. Java-based games are cool, I just don't know where to find more.

Things I don't like about the phone are minor. The vibrate mode is very quiet and I can't feel it ringing. The SIM phonebook chops names but the internal phonebook accepts slightly longer names. The instructions are woeful. The voice dialing capability is mired because you have to go through 3 menu options to dial by voice. My old phone had a button on the side just for that, so there's no fumbling while you're driving.

All in all, a great phone. I'd buy another without question.

                          TO ANYBODY WITH DRIVER-PROBLEMS:
I and two of my friends all bought V180s
a couple of weeks ago. Here is some info that might be useful.

                          Checklist
                          1. Get Mobile Phone Tools Version 3.x
(If you can't find it, get Version 2.x and use the LiveUpdate function.)
                          2. Install it. Nothing else. (At least we didn't have to!) Plug in v180.
                          3. When clciking MPT-icon, if the software doesn't start, wait. WAIT. wait. Wait some more. Wait.
                          3. If it is searching for a modem and doesn't find one, have the phone checked.

It really helped having several phones present as a way to find the problem.
                          -------------------------------------
Now I can see a lot of different solutions here for the driver problem, but the above way worked for all of us, everntually. (One phone had to be returned (modem-problems) and we also had some problems installing on one PC. But we got em all working.

Concerning the quality of the phone, I just love it. I've got 6 mp3's (30sec) on it as ringtones, the iTap has REALLY been improved, the battery is living up to expectations 100% (12 hour first charge + full dicharge and recharge after that gives 6 days + 2hours talk.) and I can't find a single problem with it except for the varying quality between the individual phones... I was lucky with my v180, but I understand how it would feel buying a non-working one.

                          Still, well worth the money.

I'm new on this site and I'm only in town for 2 weeks, then I'm getting shipped out. A friend told me to post my question on here if I wanted an answer. I just bought a v180, and am trying to find out what I need to download and how to use it so I can transfer ringtones, games, wallpapers, etc and any advice where to find games. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated before I head back out. I'll be checking back everyday, and thank you.

I have the v180 and discovered that my usb cable for my dell dj first gen worked for my v180. I am still hunting the drivers so the cable will work. So far everything I have found does not work and phone tools was to glitchy. Like the phone and will like more when I can add tunes and pics.

I have downloaded everything. Installed everything. When I run MPT it says Mobile not found. Everything is connected and installed as told. I also did the redirection of the driver to MPT/etc...
DOES THE PHONE HAVE TO BE UNLOCKED FOR it to work with MPT !! ??????

Damn, I miss my LG. Never realized how much I liked it til I got this thing. Less volume control, not as intuitive, smaller display. And now I need rivers that no one can find. Motorola charges for them?? I won't forget that in two years... I switched from verizon cuz my gal has AT&T. The things we do for love.
