sisi, 25 Jan 2009ZN5 is a gimmick!!! Don't compare it with the best N series... moreThe N-series are usually more expensive, but let's take the closest one and compare Zn5 to N79.

Fast Linux Vs. Slow series 60
        500MHz Cpu Vs. 369Mhz CPU
        Standby: 580h vs 372h
        Talk: 9h30m vs. 5h30m

Not to mention that the Kodak camera in the Zn5 has beaten every cell-phone cam in phones availeble, even the 8MP ones :)

And it is slimmer, smoother and has a multi-function keypad :)

well since guys we are in gsmarena, aren't you wondering why they did not bothered to make a review of this phone if this is really worth the attention???\

            camera review???
            Interface review???
            Multimedia review???
            features review???
            usability review???

well it's obvious why, I visited the sites that praised this phone and to my surprise those were US sites and americans which particularly is well known to support Motorola products. CNET asia??? NYtimes??? Mobile-review???

these are the sad facts folks... don't get blinded

              Camera

We'll start off by saying "Wow". Motorola showed us 16 x 20 enlargements made from images taken with the ZN5. The pictures looked frickin' amazing. The color was excellent, the light balance and exposure were top notch, and focus was crystal clear. Keep in mind, these examples were shot by professionals using the ZN5 under the best conditions possible. They showed the the camera is capable of.

The camera is positioned on the back of the phone and has a lens cover. Sliding open the cover (or holding down the camera button) starts the camera, which must be held horizontally for picture taking. The camera launches in about 1.5 seconds, which is reasonably fast for a cameraphone.

With the camera open, some secondary buttons appear on the keypad with Motorola's ModeShift. ModeShift is Motorola's term for buttons and controls that change when the phone is used in different modes. In this case, they are camera-specific and include a trash can for deleting pictures instantly, as well as dedicated sharing and gallery buttons. These buttons are illuminated purple, and match the purple camera menus and camera button on the side of the phone.

The menu system for the camera is contained in a little circular button on the screen that corresponds to the D-pad. Hitting up or down on the D-pad cycles through the vast selection of menu items. Pressing left or right on the D-pad cycles through the options in each of the menus as you cycle through them. Now, not all of the ZN5's camera functions are available in this little menu. Only the most important ones: Flash, resolution, shooting mode, and one or two others. The bulk of the phone's configurable options are found in a more standard options menu. What's important here is that the options you use the most are only one or two clicks away, and can be changed almost instantly. You don't have to dig through menu after menu and screen after screen to find them.

Motorola developed this software with Kodak, which happens to know a thing or two about cameras. That means there is some powerful image-processing going on in the background as you frame and take your pictures. For example, Kodak's Perfect Touch software is on board. If you take an image that happens to have less than perfect exposure,PerfectTouch can automatically brightens the image, highlights details in the shadows and drastically improves balance and color. There are also advanced editing features built into the phone that allow you to make any num

The camera itself is 5 megapixels. It has a full flash and that makes for much better pictures taken in low-light settings. The camera has been optimized for taking pictures in low-light settings. Kodak said that 70% of all pictures are taken indoors, so it made sure to include this low-light sensitivity. Pressing the shutter button halfway will focus the image in less than 1 second. Compared to many other camera phones that have autofocus, this is pretty fast. You can, however, override the autofocus and just press down all the way on the shutter button to capture an image faster. What this does is set aside the autofocus and sets the camera to a standard 6 feet to infinity focus mode.

The ZN5 is, without a doubt, the fastest cameraphone we've ever used. It saves pictures and re-sets the camera for the next picture quickly. In some tests, we were able to take as many as ten shots in 4 seconds.

Another exciting feature is a completely fool-proof panorama mode. Using the panorama feature, the ZN5 lets you paste together three images to give you a super wide-angle shot. Based on the unscientific experiment we conducted, it can create a panorama that is approximately 270 degrees wide. The software on the camera then auto-stitches the images together to produce one final image. It works great and is super easy.

In all, the camera is the most impressive we've seen on a cameraphone. Sure, there are other 5 megapixel shooters out there, but this one combines quality with ease of use. With many other devices we've tested, you usually have to sacrifice one of the above. The ZN5 sacrifices nothing

ZN5 is a gimmick!!! Don't compare it with the best N series in terms of price/usability/features ratio!!!

ZN5 features are lame...nothing new, nothing unique just the same old Motorola exterior!!!

Crypto, 22 Jan 2009compared to ZN5 Nokia 6220 classic has: No High Speed... moreof course all phones have advantage compared to others and the ZN5 has a few...

crystal talk? nothing unique compared to other brand's latest solution...try others cause I already had with this phone, nothing spectacular...

High Speed Camera Startup/Superfast shot-to-shot times? again nothing groundbreaking or worth mentioning...Latest SEs and Nokias have competitive solutions in terms of camera shutter times even the review sites did not sight this difference, because it is negligible...

Panorama Photo stitching Mode built-in? 6220 like other latest phones doesn't need this... others have panorama settings...

Other stuff that Motorola ZN5 has??? Remember Motorola has nothing in terms of the needed things of practical features smart phones must have... here they are:

no zoom configuration in 5mp camera!!!
no 30 fps vga video recording!!!
                    no HSDPA!!!
                    no widely accepted OS (Linux)!!!
no readily available customizations (themes etc.)!!!
                    no HSCSD!!!
                    no 16 million colors!!!
                    no GPS/A-GPS!!!
                    no office applications!!!
                    no voice memo!!!
                    no T9!!!
                    no document viewer!!!
                    no message reader!!!

and many more gaps you'll discover when you get your hand with the ZN5... Latest Nokia N series beat revamped Motorola line-up BIG TIME!!!

Motorola MotoZINE ZN5 has a high performance The high performance owes to the implementation of a powerful hardware platform powered by Freescales CPUs with operating frequencies above 532 Mhz, further boosted by interface optimizations. The software side of Motorola ZN5 bases off the Linux Java (LJ) platform bearing the version number 6.3, which is the same with U9
Motorola phones traditionally offer very imaginative theme settings everything’s quite easy to handle ...
The main menu can be viewed as icons or as a list, 9 icons or list items fall into the field of view at the same time. In addition to these traditional modes, the Spinner mode is available – the bottom of the screen shows a strip consisting of six icons, while the center of the screen is occupied by one large (currently selected) icon. The icons enjoy good graphics and smooth animation. This menu can be navigated through with the help of numerical keys, the subitems of each particular menu item can be only displayed in the list form. You can rearrange the order of icons to your ultimate liking. The menu is very friendly and customizable, serving to further personalize your handset

to say ZN5 is closer to N82 than any other 5 Mp cameraphone available from the market these days. It should be noted that we aren't hinting at possible design or idea plagiarism, it's just our experiences that were very much the same after we played a bit with the both handsets. The photos taken with the phones say for themselves, regardless of all the difference in the handset design. ZN5 looks better, more luxurious, since exterior design has long been known to reside on Motorola's specialty list.
The most part of the casing is made from metal, the same substance was used in V8. Side pieces and keypad framing are composed of plastic. The bottom part is also plastic, though unexpectedly covered in a thick layer of rubber instead of the traditional soft-touch coating. For the first time in history we saw rubber to make part of such a high-ranking product, which is certainly a plus. Should the handset happen to fall, the rubber is sure to dampen the impact, the phone will never get slippery because of sweat - it will always feel firm in the hand
The handset comes with a sole polyphonical speaker, though its quality and maximum volume are extremely high.
The screen diagonal amounts to 2,4 inches, which is quite up to the modern standards. The screen quality is very high, bearing an evident advantage over Nokia N82. The colors are maximally natural and saturated, it’s one of the best screens on the market.

dams, 24 Jan 2009zn 5 has no crystal talk by the way.went to the service cen... moreJust wanna share on your comment on Crystaltalk. ZN5 has Crystaltalk for sure and I truly believe ZN5 is one of best 5MP Camera phone in the industry now, if not the best.

With regards to your info obtained from "service centre" that other brand has better cams than ZN5, personally I wouldn't want to believe them 100%. This is based on my personal experience with several phone brand "service centres" that I've encountered. I've several questions or doubts as listed below:

                          - Does that service centre belongs to Motorola or appointed centre?
                          - the particular person you spoke to could be a die hard SE or Nokia fan,
                          - the shop probably service & repair all phone brands so condemning certain unfavorable brands are normal due to personal preference,
                          - Motorola did not give them good profit margin on parts or labour service for the service & repair of their phones,

I've been to many phone retailer shops & service centres before, majority of the shops don't promote Motorola, they say it's not a good selling brand, meaning they can't make a lot of money from it. They rather sell what the customers want so if they ask for SEs or Nokia, the salesman doen't need to spend time talking so much to convince them on other brands instead. Less time to serve a customer to sell, more time to serve other customers and ... more profits. Unfortunately that's business. So sometimes for the sake of getting easy/fast profits, many retailers wouldn't "push" the better product. So unfortunately again, Motorola is the unfortunate one this time around.
